Forms Training

Ray Pina who are you talking too? Dont get your panties in a bunch. I wasnt talking about you, why are you so defensive? does the shoe fit? I’m confused

Do you think that I was meaning you when I made that general statement? LOL

Please cut and paste where I said your name in my post.

BTW didnt you loose your last amature fight? you dont have a big enough platform to boast from so lets keep this civil hmmm?

You are lucky to have not grown up where I did then, fights basically went like this, the dude would roll up on you with his buddies, if you hooked it up and it went to the ground, and it looked like you were getting the best of him, they started stomping you, end of fight, then again they’d jump in standing too, but at least you could try to run. This is one of the reasons I always go armed nowadays, and a reason I prefer to stand and strike, I have a black belt in Judo, but I prefer to stand and strike, also because I am better at striking so that plays into it as well.

forms (done right) = shadowboxing + resistance for the footwork (via low stance-transations.)

For example, and this is just my experience in sparring as a total clutz-who-moves-like-a-newb, a typical form might have a move such as a bow stance backfist- step through-horse stance roundhouse punch combo. The aforementioned punches in the form are usually going to be large, circular punches. Powerful, yes, but slow (in multiple sparring though, a GREAT way to “clear the air”). Not to mention the fact that usually such a combo features one arm being pulled all the way back, therefore leaving the person open. So what does this teach? Perhaps different things for different people. Here’s what I gleaned from it.

First, I shorten the backfist into a linear punch that we’re also taught- basically a jab-type punch from a side-facing stance. However, all the small muscles in my arms that the big-swinging backfist utilitized, help to supplement the small-jab backfist. I use the resistance provided by the transition from bow-stance to horse stance in order to quickly change my feet in my lighter, narrower fighting stance without telegraphing too much. I then cut the movements of the swinging-roundhouse punch short to make it a nice body blow, keeping myself covered all the while. I don’t pull my arm all the way back like in the form, rather I coordinate the opposing shoulder, gaining a little bit of extra working space, while throwing my body into the punch. The posturing in the form helps to keep me from “folding” while sparring as well. Like speed, every way of fighting has a way of teaching these things. I just happen to have a lot of fun with this way  Some people find it boring, or think it’s silly if they’re particularly self-conscious,

This is just my experience, and if it’s a bit long-winded, my apologies. I’m sure it’s been said before, and better, by others, but there’s my two cents. If you like I can even throw in a grain of salt… maybe half a grain? A sodium chloride molecule perhaps?

dont get me wrong…I think drilling basics and sparring are much better ways of learning to fight than forms, but they have their place. I used to HATE forms, now I kind of like them, kind of, it helps train my memory and at my age ANY help in that area is good  One thing I have noticed though and this is in general, most people in this country have NO CLUE how to fight, evidence the fact that I can routinely take out guys less than half my age, and it seems to be going downhill, I think its part of the emasculation of this country, we are becoming a country of mamas boys and pansies, due to parents coddling their children. Non-competitive sports…lol. Why didnt MY child get his black belt? GMAFB.

True true… when competition is gone, the will and the reasons to survive and persevere soon follow.

Lucky numbers: 7, 10, 15, 25, 36, 42

(sorry, I just realized my above statement was kinda fortune-cookie-ish… thought I’d run with it. Feel free to play those numbers if you feel so inclined.)

where did you find an internal school with no forms? I would have loved to have found one of those back in the day…did I mention I used to hate forms…I now admit you need them for somethings but man I really hated them back in the day…

If I played the lotto I would indeed try em out…couldnt hurt…lol.

In the beginning, there are drills and segments of forms.

In the middle, there are forms.

In the end, there are no forms and just you.

I’m talking to you now. And yes, I lost my last amatuer fight.

You said I was talking nonsense, and since I’m the one rebuttling you here and you made the statements that I already quoted, and now want to talk about panties … I;m saying stop talking Shifu For Life. Infront of everyone here, in front of your students, in front of your master’s, in front of you … Let’s see what your 16 years of form can do against my 4 years of internal.

Yes or no. That’s all I want from you.

Ray

I don’t mean to be a pri(k sifu for life. Just I took the day off and got back from checking the surf and want to know where we stand.

I wouldn’t have gone this far if you didn’t get personal and take the attitude you did. But you reap what you sow. So let’s see it. Please confirm and set up a charity MMA match or even better no rules.

If not, take your place on the sidelines and talk form, promote the “master’s” you studied with, or apparantly met at a seminar or show and took pictures with. Fine, promote your lies (Shaolin was Buddhist, not Taoist as your site says) and make money. Don’t talk fight if it’s something you know nothing about. Don’t talk fight training, if it’s nothing you know about.

If I’m wrong, and you’re feeling skilled from your training, I’m willing to be your example. But it’s sifu like you that are the last anchors in a time of great martial progress all round. There’s never been such a commitment by so many to push our skills up. You’re talking poison for your own ego and profit.

But that’s it. No more talk.

I know what you’re talking about - memphis has has a higher crime rate than any city in ohio has ever had… I’ve seen people get stomped, but it doesn’t always happen. that’s my only point. Just like you also hear people say “On the ground you have jagged rocks and broken glass” sure you do sometimes, but that’s not always the case.

I think it goes beyond that. We really don’t fight anymore. period. I’m not that old (28) but when I was younger, we fought. we got beat. we fought again. Now, everyone just wants to either shoot or have their friends help them. people really don’t have to fight solo anymore. Heck, people are scared to fight for fear of being shot. The hood isn’t full of momma’s boys, it’s full of people who would rather shoot than fight. That said, I wouldn’t say that most people have no clue how to fight - that’s WAY to broad of a generalization.

are the backfist and roundhouse off of the same hand? if so, we do this in boxing and muay thai with much narrower footwork, as we don’t do stance training. The jab / hook is known as “hooking off the jab”

My bad, I fogot to elaborate, the backfist and roundhouse are on different hands(L-Backfist, R-Roundhouse/ L-Backfist-Jab R-Body Hook.) The Backfist is used to close the distance, while the feet move in and the other hand does the roundhouse/hook.

hooking off the jab sounds awesome, though! I’ll have to practice it, and try it sometime in sparring
