The advantages of kicking

the way i see it the biggest + and - to executing a kick is that
a) its more powerful than a punch
b) its slower than a punch

however ive seen people who can punch harder than what 98% of us can kick at and my sifu can kick faster than 98% of us can punch at.

So whatever you choose to do train it to the fullest potential.

if you wish to kick make sure that you can kick faster than the other guy can block step in and counter or whatever, if you choose to use hands make sure you can bridge tha gap faster than the other guy will land that kick in your head

This is because THC is not an alkaloid. It does not contain a nitrogen atom, therefore it is a terpenophenolic compound

funny that kick have worked for millenia. Karate guys with no ground skills have used them to fend off 5 or more opponents. Say where? when? I know a karate guy that did. Kicking is great.

Now in our infinite wisdom, we think that balance is impossible, that you will always get taken down.

NEWSFLASH kicking trains balance, there are kicking drills for balance, this is slightly diffent than a wrestlers root, both are neccisary for fighting.

I can kick on ice, back when I did karate, my Sensei told me that this was a true mark of kicking ability and balance. I work on kicks, my hands are great, kicks train explosive power and explosive punches and are a must for kung fu practitioners, only stance training and throw training slows you down, kicking keeps you lined up. I love my northern kicks and hsing I power punches. Anyone that thinks hands are IT had better open up a history book, the taller kickers of china traditionally won.

The taller ones being in Shandong or course.

They had to make kicking in karate competitions mandatory because no one was doing them.

But, what if you broke your arm? You’d want to know how to use the legs as least a little.

high kicks? Would you get on your knees and punch someone in the foot? It makes no sense

Hats off to your friend Legend. Kicking did work!

The only tactical principle which is not subject to change; it is, “To use the means at hand to inflict the maximum amount of wounds, death, and destruction on the enemy in the minimum amount of time." [/i]

being a kicker…

If you are a kicker…a real kicker..one would expect you to knoe WHEN you can kick.

Ice= no
crowded space= no
sore legs= no etc…

A real kicker knows his limits and teh ground he is kicking on. When my TKD buddies tell me they can’t kick “in socks and on a tiled floor” I just laugh at them… “So should i just take you to teh ground and pound you then?” (my answer)…that usually doesn’t go over that well.

“Taller kickers o f china traditionally won”?

Where is that documented?
How can you measure their fighting skill and experience?

Most Traditional CMA’s stick to kicks below the waist. Kicks above the waist in the street will get you cranked. Even an untrained person can blunder into your kickline from an oblique angle and force you off your support leg.

i’ll never forget the first kick defence i was taught at my class. my sifu started by asking us newbs who would do what against a nice muithia kick to the ribs. a couple people went to the front and said i would block this way or that way and follow with this takedown or this sweep, and my teacher said we were all missing a very important point … when someone kicks the leg on the ground has all their weight on it.

"even if you can block it, the impact will most likely to be so big that it damages the blocking area. "

lets say i dont block it and you break my ribs . .. but at the same time i break your knee. who wins?

one of the concepts i learned to defend a kick is to do whatever you can to block or evade the kick, but you also need to really pay attention to the leg on the ground. if you can get to it and hit it right they aint getting back up. i would take a kick to the ribs to break a knee or ankle. i have heard allot of you guys say that “depending” on the famous knee breaking side kick will get you killed in a fight. i agree with you as it’s not going to work every time, but when someone has all their weight on one leg it becomes a poll that is begging to be broken.

"When you ARE a good kicker..there is no low or high consideration to think about. "

i dunno man … high kicks can work or they could work for the other guy.

“On the street, unless you’re fighting someone trained who’s used to catching or countering kicks they probably(confidence over 50%) won’t be caught or countered.
Now on the street you damn well better be using the right kick, at the right range, at the right time. Even a front kick can get hosed up if thrown at the wrong time. A good kick to the solar plexus is a glorious thing to behold.”

agreed.

“I’m a small guy and . . I [don’t] particularly like the kicking range.”

tall fu ckers can punch you where you can barely kick them. as a little dude i see where you are coming from.

“Since I study a Northern style, I train kicking a bunch, but it seems that you should just use the best offense or defense for the situation. If kicking is not in your arsenal, then don’t use it, if it is, figure out how to use it effectively.”

the style i study definatley has a southern flavor to it and i definately agree.

“Most Traditional CMA’s stick to kicks below the waist. Kicks above the waist in the street will get you cranked. Even an untrained person can blunder into your kickline from an oblique angle and force you off your support leg.”

agreed 100%. in my style (at least for us newbs) it is mandatory that your tailbone points toward the ground at all times. if a kick (high kick)will make it otherwise dont use it. on the up side i am certain to do everything i can to remain centerend and stable at all times. on the downside i give up some long ranged attacks.

for the record i am a fast and relatively powerful high kicker. not tooting my own horn, but being flexible and practicing power kicks (below the waist) will do that for ya. however, because of sylistic differences i preffer not to kick above the waist. not to say that it can’t work, but i’d preffer not to take the unneccessary risk if i don’t have to.

where’s my beer?

Kicks

Kicks are great if you are a kicker and know how to set them up, even a spinning kick can be effective. To be an effective kicker you MUST train every day and work combos bigtime. Kicks are great. You just have to know how to use them and train accordingly.
