Anyone going to the BOC I would like to go and check it out. It lists the directors for the San Shou events as Directors - National Director: Cung Le, Local Director: Scot Sheeley, Advisors: Shawn Liu, Chan Pui, An Ting Rong, Hoi Lee. It starts Feb. 28th. I have heard this event is getting better than before as far as San Shou goes, but I have never been to it.
Anyone know about it have any info on it? I tried emailing and it is hard to get a reply, maybe because it still a little while away.
I would like to attend the sparring matches though. One thing I don’t totaly get though is…
C Body gear, Head gear, Shin & instep gear are required
NO HEAD SHOTS ALLOWED
B Head gear, Shin & instep gear are required.
Body gear is optional, Head shots are allowed.
A NO Body gear, Head gear, or Shin gear allowed.
Head shots are allowed.
What exactly determines what class your in? A, B, and C are for adult and children, I think. Anyways, if you have no San Shou experience but plenty of MA, trainning experience then how to you determine what I am assuming is begginer, intermediate and advanced class? I sure as heck don’t want to be forced into a begginer match just because I have no San Shou under my belt. While I like to win I don’t want a total mismatch either.
Anyone have any info to add here or comments? Please post.
I’m gonna beee there… I’m gonna bee there… u know knock on wood if everything goes as planned… I been up against san jose and houston fighters but I haven’t tested any of the other teams yet… this should be fun… but at my weight… I should have a busy weekend… hopefully…
Ah-nuld has always been big on this huge “sport and health” expo (he is mr. national fitness counsel after all) and other martial arts tournies have been there for years.
sh!!!t… san shou need all the commercialism it can get… put me on ESPN… pay me to train full-time… get my azz up outta this cubicle… I’d do just like Tito and retire at 29… if I was a young boy I’d sneak to China and fight on Kung Fu X… naw not really… but u get my meaning… $500 - $1000 for a fight… u trippin… i want some of the Budweiser $$$… give me some of that Brand Jordan $$$ like ROy get… now thats a rant for dat azz…
Crap! you mean I have to start at class C? That sucks. No head shots, and that is one of my favorite places to hit.
Oh-well is that the standard every were? If so I may as well get started. Is there no delimiter to years of training other than how many matches you have fought?
At any rate it should be a lot of fun to participate.
I think if u really wanted to u could fight B… u could fight A if u don’t mind misrepresenting yourself… but it’s a BIG difference IMO from B to A… I think C div is a cop out or just for the rec folks…
Oh well, it’s promoting Martial Arts too so that is good. They are going to have a lot of different arts there, everything from flashy forms, weapons too SanShou.
I noticed on the rules .pdf it says for over about 180 lbs (I think) you have to use 14 oz. gloves, is that the standard size? I know it ranges down to 8 oz. but I don’t know what the norm is for San Shou.
I know there are no elbows but isn’t it legal to strike with the forarm?
Suntzu,
Your right. I don't want to sign up in class C and then be up against someone who just started Kung Fu 6 months ago. Winning is great and all but I want to earn it not be given it.

Sounds right. practically all fighters train with 16 oz gloves. and I believe amateurs must use a minimum of 12 oz.?
“How tough could A class get?” - LMAO - unless you are solely training sanshou, sparring daily with a stable of good fighters and have an experienced, committed trainer - you’ll get punished.
no you can’t hit with forearms! (If you needed this tactic to win you should probably watch from the stands…)
As one of the people that will be putting the brackets together I can tell you that feel free to enter the B division, we have never put anybody in the C division. I personally think C is silly but in my day there were no levels. As far as A division goes; there are at least 5 national team level fighters spread throughout the divisions.
ShaolinTiger as usual is right except, there are more dangerous teams than NYKK going and most of the best NYKK fighters are in the superfights.
Anymore questions? I’ll be talking to Rudi Ott from Boston , sorry, Cung’s school soon and can relay any questions.

I wasn’t implying that they were any better or worse than any other team. I was just reading a thread from sifu Ross about clinching and the name jumped out. It could have easily been Boston, San Jose, Texas, Ohio etc - they all hit pretty hard
