Boxing didn’t always use gloves.
I’ve done that, and I’ve seen both work. You’re the one claiming there’s a difference between the two of them.

Yah man, you’re right…those chi gung exercises that boxers use are pretty good. I especially like the way they cultivate thier chi and then disperse it throughout thier bodies using various static postures and visualization, while beating themselves about the torso with bean bags.
Oh, and I love the way iron body experts practice endless rounds of sparring, bagwork, situps, etc… Sheesh, what iron body expert would be caught unprepared for their upcoming ten round title match on pay per view?
So who were these iron body practitioner’s that you saw demonstrate effectively under stress? I’m ready to join their class!

actually shi deqian out at shaolin is widely acknowledged for this. The guy is 70+ but allows and invies full-force blows to any part of his body (including ribs containing some vicious vital points…how does peeing blood for 2wks sound?)
He still doesn’t know where the strike is aimed prior..is that what your after? Deng Feng you’ll find him…shi…de..qian ![]()
Boxing gloves aren’t designed to protect the head.

Sorry…Boxer’s wear gloves. I’m talking about Iron Body not good 'ol fashioned body conditioning…which I have a healthy respect for!

they haven’t always used gloves.
When I hit the bag, I never use gloves. striking the bag will do wonders for your conditioning. DOn’t think so? let a thai boxer kick you…

Have you seen this? If you have, was it due to qi gung or body conditioning? Do you have a clip?
On a side note, I have hit a 60 year old boxer(sparring with my dad, I didnt just clock some old boxer dude) full force in the face and he didnt seem to have the kind of trouble you would expect from a senior citizen. Staggered him a bit, but he kept on fighting.
HAVEN’T. HE IS ONE OF CHINAS TOP 10 MASTERS THJOUGH AND I HAVE NO REASON TO QUETION WHAT I HAVE READ ON SEVERAL DIFFERENT OCCASSIONS. MY GUESS IS QIGONG, HIS INTERNAL PROWESS IS CRAZY..I’VE SPOKEN OF HIM MANY TIMES…BUT ONE MORE TIME…THIS GUY, JUMPS SEVERAL CARRIAGES OF A TRAIN FROM HANDS ON KNESS COLD..TELL ME BODY CONDITIONING IS GONNA DO THT FOR YOU ![]()
shaolin kungfu, please shorten your signature.
Again, have you seen him do this? Why would you believe someone when they tell you this? Common sense would tell you this is not probable. Do you have a clip?
The more chi you have, the less tension you need
I like this line…
Many need to tense up alot and regularly practice resistance and tolerance to body shots. This is b/c it’s predominantly conditioning and muscle tensing. However higher experts do not need to rely on tension and use more chi than muscle in withstanding hits.
As for sucker punching, if the person has sealed off the chi in the area you strike then he will be fine. If not, then not
If an expert seals the chi in the stomach area and walks around all day like that he will be ok. If the lower level practioner tenses right before you punch him he will be ok. At least that is my take on it.
Interestingly I knew a hard chi kung practioner who boxed. Nobody wanted to fight him…it wasn’t iron body it was iron hands and head too ![]()
I would be more convinced if the person demonstrating iron body was thin. All these fat karate masters have extra padding with which to absorb the strike.

have you ever heard of a man with surname Hau?
Iron- please, just let me have my super long sig for a while.![]()

It’s not up to me. Talk to a mod.
if on your sig you type [ size = 1 ] and then the text in your sig, then [ / size ] after it (no spaces) then it will be a smaller text size but still in the same line format… long but wont take up as much space ![]()

Relax bud, it’s just a forum…
Anyway, there’s a difference between a boxer’s ability to absorb punishment and iron body. Boxer’s cover up and position themselves to absorb impact. When they don’t, then they get hurt…maybe not a disabling shot every time but it adds up.
Iron body seems to rely on standing there and “just taking it”. I’ve never seen one of these guys who could take strikes when off balance or trying to actually fight another person. My point is, what good is it if you have to ready yourself and then allow someone to strike you in order for it to work?
As a side note, the master that can jump the rail cars…BS!
It’s 2004 pal, if this was true we’d have clips, TV specials, and live performances to prove what you say. The Guiness Book people would be all over it! Also, even if thsi old man can do those things, can his students do them?
Mike
I’ve never done Iron Body myself but I’ve sparred against a serious practitioner (professor of MA and Chinese Medicine at Beijing Uni, former all-China Wushu all-around champ, wrote tai chi and qi gong textbooks for Beijing Uni, etc - all-around legend, age 37 at the time).
Well it was strange…
Aside from the fact that I could hardly get him (which had nothing to do with Iron body but with crazy physical and MA skills) the few hard hits I got it was like hitting a rubber tire or a steel bar alternatively, despite his size (slim). Fact is that his 50% hits were seriously hurting me / damaging me (I’m quite ‘externally’ fit and strong) whilst my 80-90% hits were alternatively (depending on the body part hit) flowing off him like water / bouncing off like a rubber ball / hurting me like hitting steel.
Not sure what was down to iron body or to the otherskills combined, but he seemed scarily untouchable and unharmable when touched (and I think he was kind of letting me).
Strange and interesting and I’d like to learn more, but these days I hardly have time enough for basic external training.
