I am going to argue that Kung fu is actually the jack of all trades master of none. Most Kung fu styles primarily teach striking. Kung fu people train striking in the air and on pads, forms, two-man forms, qi gong, maybe conditioning, mostly compliant technique/sensitivity drills.
Kung fu people become good at all of these activities individually and never reach the pinnacle which is striking a resisting opponent while not getting struck themselves. The promise of fighting ability is held out like a carrot with each new way of looking at moves in forms for possible techniques, “new” ways of issuing power, "new drills to train certain aspects. Then most lose their mi ds and focus on one aspect(usually not sparring) or several and forget the true goal: to become a powerful fighting machine.
The question is asked by a casual non-martial artist. “What can you do, Kung fu man? You’re probably really good right?”
Kung fu man shrugs uncomfortably(cause he has not gauged how good he is) and says, “Yep.”.
“Show me something cool!”. Kung fu man breaks out a form. What the Kung fu man does not realize is that he is good…but at all those activities and not fighting. The Kung fu man is the real jack of all trades master of none.
your opinion of what kung fu is, is incorrect. perhaps if you knew more, researched more and had more experience than you do, you might have a difference in opinion. From what you have poste dits apparent tht you lack knoweldge about kung fu.
it is said that its better to keep your mouth shut about a topic in which you know little of, and be accused of being a ignorant, then to open your mouth and prove it.
How can a guy who doesn’t know any kung fu present an argument about Kung fu?
I know, run on over to the smithsonian and tell them how to make the dinosaur skeletons more pretty or something.
Actually, you are the biggest proponent of all the various aspect of kung fu that would support the argument that it would be the jack of all trades but master of none.
I was called little cricket, since I jumped or hopped a lot.
I yelled out loud, mantis, mantis, but still everyone called me cricket. I was very skinny and light weighted, no strong forearms. in high school and college, I did have strong forearms.

there are qin na (grappling) and shuai (throwing) inherent in many styles.
Actually,I don’t know much about kungfu and am only here to puff my chest in some lame attempt to feel better about my lame and pathetic personality.

nobody call themself kung fu man:)
Last time someone asked me, “Do you still do that chop chop stuff?” Some people may get their idea about Kung Fu from old 007 movies - a flying side kick through the wall, here he comes, there he goes.
The Smithsonian would love to have me. Maybe they have ancient replicas of people doing real Kung fu and you can learn something by going there too.
