It’s a hypothetical genius! The point is to have people share what they think on how and when to apply pak sau…
That was the worst god ****ed thing I’ve ever seen.
If that’s what you think Wing Chun is, you should quit now.

You’re kidding, right? Did you miss the point in the video where he’s trying to get people to think on what they would change to make it work? The when and how?
Read the comments underneath the video if any of you are confused on what kind of conversation I’m trying to start here…
Because he is not extending with his Pak. If he kept going into a jum then punch it should block it if you control it wit your elbow. This would also mean you would be in a better position to attack them when the being the hand back
I thought the video is okay since the point is just get people thinking. If I was there I’d raise my hand enthusiastically and if teacher points at me here’s my attempt at an answer:
That move isn’t a block. It’s not supposed to stop a straight punch that has power. At best it can deflect a few degrees of angle and establish touch contact. The guy on the receiving end should turn to evade the punch or make the punch hit him at an oblique angle so there’s little power in the impact. It’s okay if his chest gets touched if little energy is transferred. (not so good if the attacker is holding a knife though) If the punch is aimed at his head he should get his head out of the way, even if he uses a deflect/parrying motion. Then the hand that did the intercept may be in position to chop to opp neck or jaw, or something similar.
If he is doing pak sau like that he must have other videos like:
Why doesnt Tan Sau, Bong Sau, Jut Sau, Lan Sau, and Jum Sau work!
Utter rubbish!

I assume that what you are getting at is people’s inability to transfer things from stationary drills to a real time situation. It’s too bad that the conversation is soo unproductive.

I am curious. What do you consider good Wing Chun? Could you pull up something from youtube to show us?
I thought the video is okay since the point is just get people thinking.
Yea, I am not sure what all the sniping is about. If you teach any striking art, people have trouble with their defense and it usually stems from the same couple of mistakes. The point of the video was to show it erroneously so that we could then see it correctly.
Judging by the comments, the follow up video strongly needs to be posted.
The timing could be off, if the pak only catches a bit of the attack the pak can still turn into a punch and hit the opponent. Turning the stance will help get the body out of the way. Or footwork to the side can do the trick as well
why do pak sao …
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQBhp-2nQ-E
from 19:00 sec…
pak is a tool to turn opponents on their axis, not as a wait and receive idea, It is part of an attacking idea we cultivate and develop. Turning on the axis can be a few degrees, so the energy is not required to be like a karate block.
If any of my students stood and tried to do whats going on in the original post clip I would stop them and show the goal of the pak in unison with our intentions as a whole. Not to play a game of “take the pebble from my hand, grasshopper”
childish game.
pak sao is like newtons cradle , it displaces levers off our centerline attack, so our strike can enter the line we face while we maintain the centerline with our ‘spent’ pak sao. IOW we dont x the line or turn while executing pak sao energy. We gain this from pole techniques , displacing energy .
Pak sao ‘energy’ is equal to jum inwards elbow striking. each creates lateral force as, newtons cradle, while retaining the ability to explode forwards. A technique we develop in lin sil di da training. Most will over use pak as seen in the clip to ‘hold hands’ or over x the centerline. or retract away before paking…things we do chi-sao for, not retracting hands prior to force exchanges.
try a simple thing to get pak sao ideas, just like the image here of the newtons cradle…take one hand and move it to your shoulder line as pak sao or steel ball held out ready to swing into center , hold your other hand as a man sao or lead guard on your centerline as a ball hanging inert, then slap the hand !SHARPLY ! in the center using elbow contractions inwards so your arm held out to the side comes in sharply and as the image, displaces the hand off the line, while now remaining centered on the line it displaced the hand off…then repeat so you do exactly the same thing back.
Each hand knocks the other off the line but stays there itself. using elbow and wrist alignment to point at the throat of an opponent.
Now add extension after paking/slapping, repeat but as the hand reaches and displaces , strike forwards , in a 1one slap, two strike action all with the SAME arm. The elbow should lead the action so the wrist doesnt x the line [dan chi-sao].
now try doing in one smooth action and you see a simple idea developing…
As you improve you refine the distance required to open the line with’pak’ energy.
Never is one asked to do this action alone while standing still with one ‘live’ arm .
our other arm is always making an striking action with the spent pak energy recycling to become the next and so on. Not pak holding an arm to control it, that job goes to the leading lin sil di da action..
I know, whats he talkin’ about ? ![]()
energy and how we use it and use it against the opponent, how do they control their actions before us ? Do they make mistakes in movement, does their pak sao cross the line if we let it. does it have energy to displace us if we dont allow it ? what happens if you cant pak sao and get jammed ?

Dude, what up with the cheezy music and PB pushing people over benches? What next? 3 Stooges version where one guy goes on all fours behind another and another "pak sau"s him over him?

Stick to the subject. Sorry if we dont amuse you, try ignoring. Your getting tedious.
