This Difficult Art Of Self-defense

I just thought I would like to share my thoughts about SD with you.
Who said it takes couple of years to learn effective self-defense?
Well,some do,I think it takes a lifetime.
The thin line between being a defender or an agressor…
Have you ever been to situations where your life has been verbally threatened or you have been insulted badly?
I have.
Some styles teach that you shall be always giving the first shots.
Some styles teach you should be waiting for the opponent´s offense and then defend (karate).
Sometimes there are situations where the attacker is your poor drunken friend (nothing to with drunken style) grabbing your lapels and pushing you.You don´t want to hurt him…
but if he keeps pushing you,you might fall on the pavement, hit your head, and die.
There are situations where the opponents may be physically weaker than you,you should be able to put them down withouh using too much force (injuries) but he might quickly pull a knife out of his pocket and stab you to death.
There are styles that teach you to NOT to damage your opponent, but then you are not able to defend your own life.
You might study SD for a long time and then get a bullet in your head.
There are situations where you don´t know if it´s going to get physical or not,you give your best shot to save your life and then you will go to jail.

Safe christmas for everyone.

Please

clairify this for me. Maybe its because I am not fully awake yet but I have missed the point of your post. Is there a point or are you just spitting out the thoughts that go through your head.

At any rate, Self defense does not take a lifetime to learn. In actuality you can learn so very effective self defense in just a few weeks. At least enough that will give you the ability to “hit and run” so to speak. It is “mastering” an art that takes a lifetime. Also, your “what if” questions sound like you haven’t done much studying on the psychological aspect of self defense. Body language, speaking tones, and attitude of your opponent give you a window into their psyche and will tell you what his/her intentions are. Even if they try to mislead you, there will be clues or warning signs of their actual intentions.

However, it is good that you are thinking, and posing these “what if” questions to yourself at the very least. This is how we learn. We explore as many posibilities as we can and try to learn the ways around and through them.

Agree.

Becoming a Good fighter can be done in a year, a GREAT fighter in 2 years – granted you are not being strung out at a commercial school, forced to wear pajamas and pay for belts/forms.

A martial artists is a lifetime pursuit, refinement, refinement, refinement. Internal! Mastery. Weapons. Specialization.

As for dealing with agressors and attacking and defending. I am confident in my training. I can attack easily, but choose to counter (keep door closed, open door, hit). I can gently put an obnoxious fool down just as well as kill him – twice before hitting the floor if need be.
I’m 27, been training since I was 4. I have learned a lot, a real , lot, Isshing-Ryu, Hung Gar, Wing CHun, S. Mantis and now Hsing-I/Ba Gua and my Master’s E-chuan, but all I see is what I need to learn, where I want to be.

Looking at what I have learned is the fighter in me. Knowing what I still need to learn is the martial artists.

Some counter-thoughts

You are already equipped to fight (offensively or defensively) just as you are equipped to run. So training is to improve your efficiency at this task. You can spend forever improving, but there is not “how long it takes to learn self-defence”, you already know it, just maybe not to great effect.

If we are truly discussing self defence, then it’s about preserving safety, not about picking who throws first. There would be no situation where you were aware of an event occuring in which you were not acting (weather to attck, dissuade, or run) with whatever you felt held the best hope of preserving your health.

You can always get shot, if you are aggressively persuing self-defence, I would expect you are armed yourself (I am).

Good to get some “answers” finally!
Yeah,I was just thinking with my voice on.

Your questions refelct the beautiful pointlessness of training.

Why go around waiting for something bad to happen? Live your life as good as you can, have fun! Make your training to be fun, not only to prepare…
If u dont seek trouble, you will probebly never have to fight. Oh and try to stay sober man!

Live your life to the fullest and stay away from drunk people who build up liquid courage from the alcohol. If life does bring you to fight then go with your instincts they usually are right. Train for the worst but expect the best.
Just my .02 cents:D
