Taking shots to the ribs

Yay!

But for those of us without much, uh, padding, are there any ways to take them better? I found out that even light thai kicks (“light” as in like 20% power, we’re-only-training-technique-and-not-putting-any-power-into-them kicks) still hurt a lot when they hit your ribs/floating ribs on the side (like under your arms).

Then again, I’m not really tough when it comes to taking pain to begin with, so is there anything I can do to be able to take them better? I don’t mean like better blocking technique or anything, I just mean conditioning or toughening up things.

medicine ball.

plus repitive practice striking from mild and gradually through to harder.

truth is, they hurt lol, only by getting used to it will you learn to recover quickly and get over the pain quicker.

diet is important for bone structure and pliability, you are what you eat.

I took a knee not so long ago, it hurt and i heard baby jesus cry when it hit. lol. But, no cracks and the rib “boinged”, took a few secs to get back into the rythym, but it’s all about getting used to it.

cheers

p.s don’t for one second think that you can make any of your bones unbreakable. but don’t think you can’t build up your bodies defences to extraordinary lengths either. Takes time and effort.

kung lek is right. you can improve, but you can’t make your ribbies impenetrable. medicine ball works good, as does core work from all safe angles and rotations.

that, and do more cardio. :stuck_out_tongue:

lol

If you think it hurts to get hit in the ribs, just wait until you get popped in the liver.

Rib shots suck sooooo much @$$. As I’ve often complained, I’m still healing from my last rib shot.

Just do what everyone else said.

Roll with them a little. Zone away from the power a bit.

Try finding a local ‘kateda’ class near you (maybe called kixa international now).

it’s an indonesian martial art thats crap for fighting, but good for toughing up…if you dont mind doing there version of hard qi-gong.

they get a lot of stick (from me included). it looks a little bad karate, and they punch with tensed arms and so on. But they can take full power punches and shin kicks to the ribs (after maybe 3-4 years of training) and resist stranglation.

and if you do find a class and go, just be careful as hard qi-gong is not the best thing in the world for you.

if you want to more conditioning without going…then follow the advice above. also wide grip press-ups (vary hand positions and angles), chins and pullovers help to.

lol @ resisting straangulation

Just practice, IF. Some of taking shots in the ribs and face is psychological. Some is physical and you can absorbed the shot by tensing your core, exhaling rapidly, and letting the blow move you. This worked in boxing anyway. Sonnon’s Shockability series isn’t that bad in this regard.

It’s always the one you don’t see coming that drops you.

get some long tubular sacs and fill them with mong beans and hit yourself all over your body with it. build it up. then dos otnes then do iron balls.

rib shots hurt. i have broken staffs over classmates shin with them laughing at me though.

I was jus looking at the old version of this post..LOL

The last time you asked if I could describe the section in my form which helps you absorb blows to the rib area. Im sorry that I never got back to you, but it’s a bit difficult to put into words.

Anyway, the section is done with dynamic tension (hard chi gung). The posture Ha Hum Batt Boy and the breath is stressed. The section not only develops dip gwut ging (rib power), but it also develops an iron bridge (forearms).

Drop me a PM and I’ll try my best to get you the info.

Take care,
Buby

P.S. If you’re going to beat yourself with anything during a conditioning session, make sure you have lots of jow to apply before, during and after your session.

No seriously Ironfist…

What you really have to do is shoot yourself in the chest and survive.

That way, when you get hit in the ribs, you’ll just go “wow, that isn’t half as bad as when I shot myself in the chest” And it won’t be so bad.

It’s quick easy and free.

In reality everyone pretty much covered it.

Use a mesdacine ball, or have a friend put on some gloves and lightly work your ribs for awhile etc. You just have to condition them.

It’s like any part of your body.

If you only work out a little, your muscles and body reflect that. They only provide you with enough strength to do what they are used it.

If you work out alot, like a powerlifter, your body adjusts due to the repititious weight lifting, and it says to itself “hey, I’ve been straining real hard a little too long and way too often, I’m gonna have to bulk myself up to prepare myself for this since I think he’s going to continue lifting this amount of weights this continuously”

Your body doesn’t prepare to take shots in the ribs unless you force it to, consistantly getting hit in the ribs is not normal so your body naturally isn’t built to sustain that type of hit like that constantly. Unless you force your body into learning to “deal” with these rib hits.

I’m not doctor but I am pretty positive this is how the body works.

Thats why deep sea divers can hold their breath longer than most, etc. They’ve forced their bodies into excelling in certain areas to cope with their consistant activites.

Some people say breath out quickly when being struck, mainly the karate stylist.

Some kungfu styles say breath in when being struck; bakmei, southern mantis, hung ga?..

Any thoughts on the different approaches.

Not exactly sure what you’re saying but I’ve been powerlifting/bodybuilding for a couple years now. But like the main point in this thread, my body doesn’t store fat so my ribs are pretty much always showing. Even on bulking diets of 4-5,000 calories a day I still never got above about 8-9% bf. So I can’t just add a little mass there. Besides, there’s really not any muscle over the ribs on the side so I would have to add fat, and as I stated before I can’t really add fat.

That’s kind of what I was thinking about doing.

I don’t want to end up with a broken rib like Vash (knock on wood).

I actually have the mung bean and rock filled bags from Wing Lam. I haven’t used them in years but I was considering getting them out again for this.

Cung-Fu, I noticed that breathe in/breathe out thing, too. I’m curious as to what people will say.

Yeah I have a bottle of their’s that’s like 5 years old. Hahaha. I wonder if it’s lost all it’s potency. Or maybe it’s super-potent. Actually I think I might have 2 or 3 bottles that are that old. I’m afraid to use them.

Someone explain to me again why you need jow. Boxers and NHB’ers don’t seem to use it and they can take shots just fine, right?
