I used to be into sportsbikes when I was younger and more reckless. Going fast, doing stupid stunts (I’ve had my picture in a magazine doing a stoppie). Then I went to Phuket for a holiday and saw the horrific aftermath of a head on collison of 2 motorbikes. If you’ve been to Phuket you’ll know that people there drive on the wrong side of the road, no helmets bascially just crazy and dangerous. It was about 3.30am one night and I was stumbling back to the hotel half drunk when I saw a big group of people ahead. There were standing around a European tourist who had come off his bike after colliding head on with another bike and cracked his head on the kerb. His girlfriend was lying next to him, both unconscious. NONE OF THEM WERE WEARING HELMETS. And people were just standing there gawking and doing nothing except for this one German guy. The guy’s head was split open and blood and brain matter was oozing out. I instantly sobered up and took off my shirt and put it against his head. They were still breathing. My first aid training told me not to move the victims in case of neck/spinal injuries. So I was thinkning ‘wait for the ambulance’ but there were none…then a tuk-tuk taxi pulled up and guys began to lift them up by the arms and legs!! The man began to give out horrible groans but was clearly unconscious.I yelled at them to support their necks/heads. I followed them to the hospital but I didn’t like their chances. After the holiday I promptly sold my bike and haven’t been on one since.
word of advice if you’re going to places like Phuket- don’t rent the motorbikes or cars. They’re cheap and look good but you don’t know how well they’ve been maintained, not to mention that your insurance probably won’t cover you if you get in an accident. We rented a jeep that had brakes that locked up as soon as you touched the pedal. Now imagine brakes locking up on a motorbike…

Been there had it happen, downhill on a wet road luckily I was slowing down approaching a traffic light.
As well as black ice in a corner at 80km/h..
Because of the black ice I started Tai Chi to help my knee & ankle heal.
Having a 750cc Engine land on them tends to shock them a bit, Thanks, got I ALWAYS wear full Leathers.
BTW, my Parents just got back from Phuket. We normally either travel by tuktuk or hire a local we know as a driver (air-cond. Mini-Van).
But, yes, those little put’s at Holiay resorts are a sure way of runing your Holiday. Plus, most of them never ever check if you got Licence to ride them.
Seeya.
P.S.: One of my shorinshi Kempo Guys is down in Osaka this Weekend giving a Demo.
Hmm. I started to get into Bikes when I lived in DC. All my friends had them. When I moved back from Japan, to SF, I was going to buy one. Then I noticed how crappily people drive here. After 4 years of hanging out with bikers in DC, the only guy who got hurt was being incredibly stupid, racing a guy on a ducati, while idiot was on his cruise bike, with his GF on the back. They were racing down Wisconsin at rush hour. ((That’s one of the Main Drags in DC)). Idiot boy lost his leg, the girl lost her pinky.
On the other hand, I was in the Bay Area for two weeks, and about to put down a the cash for a bike, when a guy I met the week before had his dad run over by a 16 wheeler while they were biking up the Coast for vacation. In the 6 years I’ve been here, I know of 15 people killed in stupid Biking accidents, generally from idiot drivers.
Worst accident I’ve seen personally was in Japan. I saw a guy get smacked by a bus, while on a bike of some form. I was on the balcony, but the guys legs were completely twisted. That’s also when I found out that the average ambulance guy in Japan has no medical training of any sort. They just pick you up and toss you in. I wonder if that’s changed.
I knew a man, who was a great martial artists, best friends with my dad. He would do pushups all the way through a 2 hours movie, run 17 miles a day, and still managed to get the award for renting the most movies. One day, coming back from renting a video, some 16 year old kid took this fine specimen of a modern “no bull**** MA” and bound him to a wheel chair, removed his legs, and caused his face to look like a giant scar. The only reason he survived was because of his fitness.
I saw a Shorinji Kempo demo at a MA exhibition at Osaka Gymnasium. Pardon my ignorance, but what’s the difference between kempo and karate? From the demo I saw they both looked similar. I’m thinking of doing a non-striking art like judo, so my wing chun training will not get screwed up.
I saw the same thing about 2 years ago , i was driving behind this car and he suddenly swerved and broke , I was like what the !!! before i could finish i saw this body flying up in the air. I parked up and i could tell this kid had just mindlessly ran into the road he couldnt have been more than 10 years old. Any way the car hit him and he flew into the air really high and landed on the bonnet and then the floor. He wasnt dead but he had really bad concussion, i mean he was ****ing super lucky.
But the craziest i had ever seen was this bike get hit by a car and the bike flew up over the car with the driver still stuck on the bike, When i saw flew , this guy was a metre above the top of the car , upside-down still straddling the bike. He was **** lucky too all he did was mangle his knee a little bit.
All the more reason to learn iron body … er no ???
i hope that kid makes it and it would be nice to hear about it if he does. ****. if anything ever happened to my daughter i would take my own life by the most immediate means available. i could plunge a butcher knife through my heart sooner than i could live with that kind of pain. my only wish in this life is that my daughter outlives me. i don’t even care how i die anymore . .. as long as it’s before she does. i don’t pray but i hope with all my heart that the kid makes it.
What it was, i was a bully of a brother, and my moms gave me 2bucks to take her to the store, and i had my own little stash money, plus milk money, so i’m carrying heavy groceries, still a kid and my sis is dragging her feet, and im *****ing…
i got like ten feet ahead of her, looked back, finished crossing the street, with my youngest sister, started yelling at the other sis, looked away and boom
she is fine now, ILL THING about it, i had just opened my eggnog as it was almost christmas" it wasnt chocolate milk", had like two sips, and dropped the ****, when i had to run the two blocks home to get my stepdad, as the bystanders watched my sister, has to be a good lesson inthat for the youth, such as DONT BE A WHINY ****, PAY ATTENTION TO THE TASK AT HAND, NOT YOUR SWEETS
kinda like the kf ideology of eat bitter, " RIGHT QEYSUS= EVEN IF IT IS CARROTS, MIGHT KEEP YOU FROM SHOWING THE DOCTOR, PUSSLUMPS FROM SCURVY…"
i was 8, my cousins gave me thier old bmx for my birthday, so im biking with my older bro and his crew, all day enjoying my new bike.
I get to fourth street as i lived on third, and thier was this steep ass hill. My bike only had footbreaks… so i’m flying down this hill, and half way start applying the breaks, but they slipping, then they don’t work, im watching the intersection rollup, go through the east-lane, and this ****ing caddillac is crossing the west lane,“as im flying south”
that caddy was lime green or sky blue??/////&LONG AS ****,
I hit the side-back bumper, flipped over the trunk with my bike and landed 5 feet? from where i hit, and about four feet from the curb…
Open my eyes slightly sit-up/ look at my bike and am just like **** my bike, drag the mangled frame to the curb then just lay thier in exhaustion.“ALL I COULD THINK ABOUT WAS MY NEW BIKE, Wich i only had for the morning and early-afernoon” All i had was a 6inch minifootball bruise on my right shin, it was huge, BUT FUNNY considering i was only 5-5 120 soaking wet, and flipped over the caddy, and all i could think was, **** my new bike.
Didnt get a bike for two more years, “legally” then on my tenth birthday i got a tenspeed, rode that all day, get home, across the street not thirty feet from THE INTERSECTION, and thier was glass on the sidewalk, so i rode happily all day then i got a flat, couldnt pay to get it fixed for a month, AS I SIAD DIDNT HAVE A BIKE LEGALLY FOR TWO YEARS, don’t know what happenned to that one, older bros friend prolly stole it.
Northern mantis, sorry you had to see something so horrific. As an EMT I see this alot. What you are feeling is very real and normal so dont feel bad about your feelings. Talk it out with a mature adult who you trust. Most of the time I can just talk to certain teammates of mine when something like that upsets me but I really get upset when childern are hurt whether accidental or intentional and it just tears me up inside( thats because I have 2 sons). Hope this kid makes it.
Well I just heard yesterday morning that the boy died in the hospital:( .
It took me a while to get over the shock of seeing such a thing.
I feel so bad for the mother who arrived minutes later and the grandmother who came later at night and found out about the whole thing.
The reason why I haven’t posted since then is because I haven’t had the time to get online much or I could have posted this days ago.
Ryu-
I 'm faring much better now, I’m more sad for the family actually. That poor boy never had a chance. It is traumatizing at first but I knew I had to move on and at least make peole aware of such things so it wont happen in the future.
About a year ago I was coming out of a pub in the high-street, and there is a fast one-way ringroad that loops my town. Me and a mate were crossing over, just in front of a bus-stop, with about 10 other people. It was a good night, and we were in party mood and although the vision of the road was obscured by the bus I though “F*ck it, I’m running”. I went to run across and something just told me not to, I stepped back onto the kerb, turned around to see a woman get hit by a BMW.
Really bad sh!t, hit her at about 40, she flew over the top. Everyone there just froze dead, the whole place just really quiet - I can’t describe it, it was like everything was in slow-motion. The driver, she was shaking, and no-one knew what to do.
It took me about 15 seconds till I reached for my mobile and called it in. By this time everyone was crowding round, a guy was doing First Aid, and my mate gave his jacket to cover her up.
After about 15 mins we were sat in The Star, and I just thought, “If I’d have ran, that’d be me”. Sounds selfish but FCK! Whole thing happened 10 yards away from me. Really fcked me up big time.
N.Mantis: We both same age almost, and KungFu Catholics I found the best way to deal with it was to put it down to pure chance, and to pray a hell of a lot. Talk it over. Me and my mate had a lot of talking to do. Best way IMHO.
