I thought that Kano’s system was for Karate. So how did kungfu get its sashes? and where did the red sash come from?
In Tkd the red is below black and in most kung fu systems the red is the highest rank. now I remember somewhere that the highest ranking student wore a white saim (sp?).

The grading system used during the days of Yip Man were that of the wooden dummy. That is to say that whatever section (10 in total) you’re on, then this would represent your level. Sadly this is not so today because students can selective learn a certain portion of the System.
In at least one lineage of Hung Gar they have only one belt, given after some years of training. It happens to be black. This particular lineage focuses very heavily on various breathing techniques. The belt’s purpose is for lower abdomen resistance training incorporated with those breathing exercises.
So the signifance of the belt is not its reflection of seniority but an aid to improve kung fu.
