Legitimate schools in San Fran?

Are there any good shaolin kung fu schools in SF? I’m going to move there for college in a few years.

Narrow down your choices

There are so many schools in the SF Bay Area. You really have to narrow it down. Exactly what style are you interested in. Are you looking for external or an internal school? Cross-training or what?

SF Bay Area has so many talented sifus and masters in one location, this area is blessed.

What NS said, 'cause he’s da man.

I’m into crosstraining with Wing Chun, Hung Gar, and Shaolin kung fu.

For Hung Gar, check out Y. C. Wong.

Choy Li Fut with Doc Fai Wong.

Why would you crosstrain in three styles that do not go together? The concepts of all three are different and will contradict each other. It would make more sense to stay with a southern or northern family. Not both… It can be done and has been, but can be highly discouraging to the practitioner at times as they contradicting one another.

Alright well, what would you recommend? :o

Where in the Bay Area are you planning to go school? That will help in finding which style will be the closes to where you live.

I think UC San Francisco.

I will let NorthernShaolin help with the schools in the Bay Area… I do not know what school are around UCSF… I do know this, I will leave you in good hands…

Okay, you’ll be in the East Bay Area so you want to check out school s that are in that area. There are many schoolsin the East Bay that are excellent but for starters:

Hung Gar

At UC Campus there are also Shaolin clubs that you may want to check out too.

Man, if you’re gonna be in the San Francisco Bay area, check out THE KWOON! www.kwoon.com ; does Sifu Wing Lam still teach in San Francisco? I hear he’s a tremendous teacher, teaches Northern Shaolin and Hung Gar Boxing. Solid combination.

Only problem is that Lam Sifu is in the Southern part of the bay. It will be a long drive for the dude.

Thanks for all of your help guys.

Oh yeah, one more problem… Where am I going to live? It’s expensive for college students to live in San Francisco. Well, I got a few years so I’ll figure that out…

Oh yeah, one more thing, check out Zhong Luo’s training center, at www.undergroundkungfu.com ; even though it isn’t exactly “Shaolin”, it’s got some Shaolin Techniques (like many systems do.) Bak Mei and Long Ying Boxing, along with Shuai Chiao, plenty of solid training there.

And you’re a college student? You going to Berkeley?

Most students at UC berkeley live around the campus in the city of Berkeley. There are many apt. or rooms for reasonable rent to accommidate the students.

While you’re at it, check out www.hungfakwoon.com for information on this Wing Chun school in S.F.

there’s nothing wrong with complementing styles such as wing chun and hung gar. just look at the iron thread form of hung gar to see if you can understand why.
