I would like to talk today about the many wonderful things about the front leg kick (FLK). In working some of my kicking techniques I have become fond of a few that I really enjoy. One sequence I like is w/ either leg I’ll just start w/ the left leg (LL). LL side kick followed w/ a RL back sweep around then up w/ a LL inside circle kick then a RL jump inside circle kick followed w/ a RL side kick, step across spin into… well we can do a low block or punch maybe a spear hand in a front stance or horse stance. Perhaps a cat stance block or attack or any number of things, but my new favorite is the FLK. Now that’s a lot of kicking around. I have just started to really appreciate this technique even though it is in many of the forms I have known for some time. I guess as things start coming together techniques start to reveal their true nature. The impressive nature of the FLK has made me think about it and I find when I’m playing and trying different things it is becoming ever more present in my movements. I admirer its elusive power and stealthy speed. You can throw it fast and like, out of no where, then it’s back on the ground or ready to strike again. The versatility makes it good at any time advancing forward, fading back, come out of a spin straight into a FLK. Now I know that many different techniques have these traits but I like to work on one at a time and right now well you guessed it. In the other styles that I have trained the FLK is not as prominent, in fact the one time I remember using the FLK was in Judo during an advance to throw off the opponent and make the grab. It works good for this even though it is not intended to have a physical effect. The quick kick allows you the throw the leg and retract it and avoid being grabbed yourself. Unlike when I was a student of Judo I now have many uses for the FLK. The thing I like most about the FLK is how good it feels. That’s right for me it feels almost orgasmic. I feel the push from my back leg and heal up through my waist oh baby it feels so good it’s like the qi just rolls down my leg WAP!!! Yes, the wonderful FLK live it, love it, avoid being on the wrong end of it. Hope that some of you can share your opinion of this technique and maybe some other fun stuff. What do you like right now? For those that have nothing but negative things to say I want to hear from you as well just remember you should not P in the water jug if you intend to drink from it yourself.
My name is Tommy M average intermediate student.

Um … nothing negative to say, dude.
Welcome to the wonderful world of the Front Leg Kick Club. Stopping opponents in their tracks since 1972.
(OK, actually a little longer than that.)

dude if you think a front kick is orgasmic then you need to get laid, real bad
front leg kick
If you really think your front kick is impressive, elusive, and stealthy… you live the Wah Lum false euphoria! Which seems to be faulting. The flk is very basic, and even more, very easy to defend. The best part of defending this basic leg attack is not the defend, but what we do to you after this kick. Have a good day.
i agree
the flk can look nice, but it is the basic kick.the first kick of all kicks and from what i have noticed,if you cannot perform the flk well then you cannot do the kicks that follow it! (when i go training we have to do about 10 or more types of kicks before we move onto our forms, northen practioners yeah!!!)
but i reckon even if you were so good at at the flk, i think it leaves you totally open.as long as your opponent has good sense of timing and distance you could easily end up on the floor a crumpled heap! (i.e…they crack ur knee while you foot misses there face)

if you cannot perform the flk well then you cannot do the kicks that follow it!
Absolutely. It’s a basic kick. If you can’t do basics well (and this includes the front leg kick), then nothing else can be done well, either.
A front leg kick is as dependable as a jab in boxing (and if you want to see a beautiful example of the jab, watch a replay of the Jones-Ruiz fight from last week, Jones dominated Ruiz and probably 95% of his punches were the basic, lowly left-hand jab).
yu shan, I guess that euphoria is the only thing that’s been getting Wah Lum students consistent tournament championships for over 20 years. Yeah. It has nothing to do with dedicated practice or knowledgeable instruction. And they’ve been winning in all categories at the tournaments, including sparring. But it couldn’t be because they’ve got a good front kick. Oh, no.
Why not prove that WL training creates “euphoria?” Train up and meet WL in tournament? All your angry words mean nothing unless you can back them up in the real world. If you don’t want to do that, don’t post slanderous statements. Go and train, and peace go with you.
Euphoria
Thank you, all for your comments so far. Perhaps I was a little excited when I typed my original post. Maybe my expression came off a bit strong I do realize that the FLK is a basic kick, and it’s not like I just learned it last week. I don’t think you can experience a false euphoria though either you feel it or you don’t. We all know how you feel about WL yushan, but I want to hear more about the FLK and your defenses. You make a good point, in fact I have been think about how to defend the FLK and that has shed some light on the concept of stepping on your opponents foot. To hold it down sense their direction it is even in a great position to launch the FLK. This too, is not new to me but I have been looking at these techniques and in my quest to understand I enjoy the fact that I have trained in four different styles for nearly ten years and I am now starting to be able to feel the kick and many other techniques. I am honored to be inducted into the Front Leg Kick Club. The term euphoria is a better way of looking at it and I thank you for pointing that out also, but like I said I doubt you can have a false euphoria. It fits better then orgasmic, I was just trying to express the joy of this simple basic FLK. The feeling I get makes me feel good about what I’m doing, and in the present times I’m lucky for it. Some of you may be to sophisticated to enjoy these simple things and to some the FLK may be mere child’s play. I myself enjoy the simple things in life. Like pizza, if you have a good sauce and crust you don’t have to pile a bunch of stuff on top of it. MMMM!!! Chesses pizza!! Or vanilla ice cream all natural Brayers of course. We all like different things and sometime it the simple things that bring the most pleasure. Maybe you have a technique that when you pull it off, or go for it, and nail it you feel good about that and you want to do it again. I think I try a few right now… Wooo that was awesome!!! It seems to me that if you are not getting some sense of enjoyment why bother…

We know who Frogman trains with, so this goes without saying.
Our group, Pong Lai Praying Mantis, trys to enter tournaments. But when your mc finds out that we are going to enter a tournament...he backs out! Seeing he brings the most participants to these tournys the tournament organinizer askes us to back out because HE makes money for the tournament. Deep down, your grandteacher is affraid of our style, because he is very affraid of Shr ZhengZhong! Because Master Shr knows bullsh*t when he see it!
In closing, wl is not a fighting art, it is just and only a forms school! SaM, why has everyone gone? Can someome just answer this question!
And we all know who YOU train with, yu shan.
Don’t wonder why “everyone” has left WL, because “everyone” has not. Wonder instead why I would never, ever train with Pong Lai, even if my training at Wah Lum ended for any reason. And then answer ME.
You know, I have heard a lot of talk about who knows what and who does this or that, yet when I posted about something as simple as kicking with the front leg all the response I see is “that’s a basic technique” and “it’s easy to defend”. I’m still waiting to hear about those APP’s., as it seems to be a big topic these days. I have posted some of the things I like but from many of you sophisticated students I’ve heard nothing but we’re better then you, and a bunch of whining and so fourth. I didn’t care the first time and I still don’t care. There are a lot of mechanics that go into a simple front leg kick as basic as it may seem. I have taken the time to analyze it and felt like talking about this subject. The simple fact is that it is not so simple!! When I started training in KF I had some bad habits from other styles that I had trained in, one being kicking with momentum rather then with mussel. The thing that I like about the FLK is to do this kick and have any power behind it you must use your ad mussels. A kick with the back leg has a certain amount of travel time in witch to gather momentum. Once in the ****ed position both methods are equal. Meaning once you leg is up it does not matter where it came from or where it’s going. Difference, to get to the **** position the back leg can be swung up but the front leg must be pulled up, my point you can build momentum on the swing but to pull the leg up requires ad mussels. To take thing further when I trained in Chung Moo “and you think you have something to whine about” I was taught to use momentum… This was hard to over come, but my Sifu gave me some exorcises that help me to do a kick without relying on momentum. The one that worked best was lots of pushups. I think it has something to do with thinking about what your doing so you don’t have to do so many pushups, or something along those lines. Now that I have kicked the bad kicking habits I can feel the differences, and the power to do the front leg kick is present as the intent is definitely there. As a beginning student I could swing the back up and have some effect i.e. say move the bag, but without the proper mechanics or technique the front leg will not move the bag. In truth, I started this thread for me. I really am not interested in the somebody done somebody wrong song I keep hearing. I would however like to hear about actual APPs. I know that kicking with the front leg is defendable just like every other technique I know. The fact that I can express myself “maybe a little over the top sometimes” but describing a simple basic technique helps me understand what I am learning and to me is a sign that I’m headed in the right direction. I’m interested in opinions about techniques not styles. We all have kicks and punches it could be KF or karate what makes them an art is understanding what your doing and how it comes together.
Don’t hate me because I’m beautiful, hate me because I look so good doing it…

I believe this forum is open to all whether beginner or Sifu or Master. Personally I pick and choose what topics I respond to and I think most on here do the same. If the topic is too basic for you then skip it and go to another topic.
Frogman,
Whatever level you’re on you’re never too good to work the basics. If that’s where you are now then work it, explore it and don’t let anyone discourage you. When I was in Kenpo I had friends asking me to show them some good fighting moves. My reply was I can show you but if you don’t train it you can’t use it in a fight. I would then show them a front kick and how to use it. It’s basic, anyone can do it and it works against untrained opponents. The problem with the more advanced MAs is that they train to beat other advanced MAs. I don’t expect to get jumped or mugged by someone as good as Pong Lai or 18 Elders but I do expect that from some idiot who will walk right in to a front kick.
yu shan,
How about posting on topic sometime? I’m going to start a new thread just for you. Other ex-Wah Lum please feel free to post also.
Frogman, that’s an interesting observation about momentum vs. muscle.
I hadn’t put too much thought into the different mechanics involved on either side, but you’re right, snapping out a front kick from cat or golden chicken stance requires a different application of muscle than bringing the back leg forward.
Any other isolation exercises beside pushups that helped you?
Thanks
Hua Lin Laoshi / SaMantis,
Thank you both for responding and maintaining focus on the topic. In my short time training in KF I have learned a lot about analyzing my techniques. More so then I have in all the time I spent in other MA systems, I owe most of this to my instructor. I have not been able to train as often as I like to lately do to my job, so I enjoy writing about it and trying to understand more about certain techniques. A few weeks ago there was a very informative thread on kwa, not being advanced I still got a lot out of it and plenty to think about. Starting this thread I did not know what to expect but I think it is finally starting to come around. I tried to stay focused on my topic and am not willing to let bashers deter me.
Hua Lin Laoshi,
I certainly would hate to be attacked by an advanced MA’ist, and if I were I doubt that my front kick or any other technique would work, so I would avoid this at all cost. Of course the guy who is going to attack out of no where is most likely the punk who had to much of a good time and thinks they can beat the world. In which case I would do my best to keep it quick and simple. Agreed, a front leg kick seems fits the description.
SaMantis,
I mentioned pushups since it seems to be a cure all, but that is not the actual method I used to over come my kicking hang up. If still interested I will PM you with some of the things that help me with my bad habits.
Also did either of you make to show on Saturday? I had a great time, the people the food the show it was all awesome. Those guys did a really great job with that place.

Frogman,
I was there. I performed a set I learned in Shanghai on the 1998 China trip. White Wah Lum shirt, black pants, white WuShoes (Wu Shu shoes, Feivues). Sifu David Scott from Kissimmee. I was after Sifu Charles Payne from Boston. Say hello next time.
Sifu Dave,
I was trying to figure out who Hua Lin Laoshi was, and I remember seeing you and thinking that must be him because you were announced Sifu David Scott from Kissimmee, and that is what your profile says… I will be at Nick S. tournament in the next few week and I will be sure to introduce myself if I see you.
