Alright, which do you like better? Canvas, or that nylon “nevatear” stuff? I think the nylon is probably softer on the hands, right?
I can’t afford leather.
Um, oh yeah, how useful is the ring on the bottom of some heavy bags to secure it to a weight on the floor? Cuz I almost bought a bag today but it didn’t have that ring on the bottom. Does it make a big difference if you secure it to the ground? Cuz I think 70lbs is the heaviest bag I can get so it’s probably gonna swing a lot. All the bags at Sport Mart and Sports Authority didn’t have rings on the bottom.
I like my canvas bag. On my big one, some of the coolant oils that got inadvertantly mixed in with the metal sawdust I filled it with have stained the bag a tad, but it doesn’t seem to bleed through to the outside layer at all.
I think it gives good texture for the Iron hand too (my small one, I only kick the big one)
My little one is an 80 pounder, and just fine for most applications unless I want to really rock it. Since I have it leaning against a wall on blocks, instead of hung up, it’s good for that too. Hanging, (when i had it hung), it moved too much. However, being so light it gave good feed back for when I try to “Sink” strikes into it.
I don’t know if that helps, I’m basically just in a mood to ramble on.
the canvas bags here are never attatched to the ground. my hands 'll split on whatever bag I use but canvas sand bags at density are bone breaking jazz… I guess you can go lighter, but but do you wanna work impact or form is the real question I guess???
I want to work impact. I want to make my Thai kicks and punches even harder. Strength and power > form. Sorry but it’s true. That’s why MA guys get rocked by big strong people who can’t fight.
This disclaimer is necessary because of certain people on the board:
I didn’t say you can get away with having NO form, so don’t even try that argument.
With a bag you work both force and form. the two are attached at the hip and the heavy bag will tell you were you need to work.
Mixx it up with your bag work, get your footwork happening and your rythym. Don’t just stand there whacking away at it. Use all your tools, move in, move out, discover where your sweet range is.
If you’re gonna get a canvas one, use bag gloves or you will shred you hands and even when they become calloused, they will still peel. That’s the nature of force feedback and friction.
If you get a vinyl one, watch the seams, they give way.
Too bad you can’t afford leather, that is and would be my first choice.
If you have 100$ you can likely get a good leather everlast heavy bag of 70 or 80 lbs.
I like canvas, but you have to wear gloves or it eats your hands up. The drawback is if you ever hang it outside or store it someplace wet, it will rot and fall apart.
Ok, if you hit the bag and your hand gets tore up, you need more Iron hand practice. Till then go softer. As your hand hardens, slowly start hitting harder, and harder. Then you have both the ability to hit really really hard, AND the hand strength to saftely do it. (Break THEM, not yourself)
Remember boys, when we are out, we don’t have the luxury of stopping the action to put some gloves on before we start hitting attackers. Our hands need to be able to handle the abuse BARE!
If you can’t do that on the bag, you can’t do that against an attacker either.

Yeah, I know. BUT since they are a bit softer, wouldn’t it be better for us to be a bit harder?
If you can hit the bag full force, bare handed and come out ok, you don’t have to worry about hitting that Biker dude you just po’d as hard a you can either.
I have a leather heavy bag, Ill never buy anything different. Its great with or without gloves.
I practice without gloves on occasion, but only go 70% because I realized that going full on a heavy bag without wrist support = just plain stupid.

I know what you mean, but I don’t think anyone could build up enough callouses to keep from busting skin after 20 solid minutes on a canvas bag.
Even if I thought I could, I wouldn’t. My woman wouldn’t let me touch her if I had Pan Qingfu knuckles.
Thanks. I was leaning toward nylon anyway. What about synthetic leather? I have to get one that they sell at a store because I don’t want to order one because shipping on heavy bags is expensive.
So let’s talk about the bottom ring now. Should I hold out until I find a bag that has that bottom ring to tie it to a weight on the floor? Or doesn’t it make that much difference?
