Do you guys think that it can be of use to have a mook jong when I have only learned SLT and CK?
It coulnt hurt.I dont mean learne the 108 tecs but to just work on stuff like foward energy and postioning and stuff like that.
What do you think?
Have you been taught any dummy drills at all?
I know how to use it I just dont know the 108 tecniques.See im going into this program over the summer because im failing in school.I will get paid $600 something for working three weeks in the shops at the school. It is quite a deal. But I dont know what to spend it on.And one of the very few things that matter to me is wing chun.I was thinking of getting a dummy but I wasnt sure being I am not 10 years into the system…
Well.That is the story…

Who told you you had to be 10 years into the system to use it? The sooner you work with it, the sooner you improve what its there for. Do you work on one in class?
I was just putting down 10 years.I knew you were going to question that!I just ment far into the system. No I dont train on it normaly.I only have a couple times. But back to the main question.Would it be a good idea?
Well, it is a lot of money to shell out. Do you think that buying one is the best and most responsible way you could spend that money?
You said that you do know how to use it, but don’t work on it much at the school. Do you think you would use it enough at home to make the investment worthwhile?
the problem about doing things you dont normaly do in class is that your sifu never sees if you are doing it properly. you could be practicing something for a year and when he teaches you the dummy you might have problems. he can see all your training in class and if he dosenty know he cant tell you your doing it wrong.
i bought a dummy before i knew all of siu nim tao,it doesnt matter at what point in your wing chun life you buy one it can only help matters and not as some people have suggested make bad habits.if you do drills in your class, then you have an opportunity to do drills away from class when you havent got a training partner..if you want a dummy buy one.screw what anyone else thinks.having one has only helped me.
Don’t have to spend the whole $600 right away
You can get an economy PVC wooden dummy for like $150 from http://www.allblackbelt.com/pvcwingchundummy.html

Benny~I am pretty aware of that stuff,I would ask him if im doing it properly.
Kung Fu Cowboy~Yes I think it is the best way to spend the money. And I would work on it alot,EVERY DAY…
JasBourn~Thanks for the site man,but I think ill pass on the PVC pipe dummy.

Chi Sau~How much did your skill improve.Well,I think it would be hard to tell since you used it before you finished SLT.I think it can realy help me and I think my mind is set out on getting one.I know I have to stay away from nasty habbits. One is keeping the structure right. But thats easy.I think a real bad one is having your energy directed to the side and not foward.Hunched back.To much movement.Stuff like that…
Do you guys know of any good sites that have good dummies that are at that price?
Well, dude, then I think you have your answer! (And they sure do look cool as hell, too!
) Let us know when you get it!
Yeah they do.I am making a clay model of one tomorow in art class. The teacher was puzzled when she saw my sketch of the dummy. She looked like a dummy.
Be careful in your purchase! I hear that there are a few companies that pretty much sell sh*t. Watch out for ones that are painted. And don’t forget, it’s gonna cost about $80 bucks or so to ship the beast! And make sure they specify what type of wood is used, dimensions, etc.
Do you know of any non bull hurkey websites??
Martial Joe … $600.00 isn’t much when it comes to buying a dummy. If I were you, I would talk to my Sifu. He may know a place that has them, or he may be able to get one wholesale for you if he sells MA supplies or has connections. Also, this will show him that you are making a long term commitment to the art and he may start incorporating some drill into your training. But the best price I’ve seen on the web was arround $800.00 not including shipping. The normal range is $900.00 to $1100.00. Also, try and get one that is from a climate that matches yours. Alot of the imports come from a very wet climate and crack as they dry out
Just trying to save ya some bucks, Joe
Try these guys:
http://www.woodendummy.net/
It’s the Great Lion Company out of Atlanta, and they have all kinds of WC dummies, from traditional to modified to JKD. You can also buy parts ![]()

Thanks Highlander…
JasBourne~Ill check it out,but last time you showed me a pvc one.I hope that was a joke.
Plastic
Dude, you can get a wing chun dummy with a plastic body and wooden arms and legs! They don’t suck like the all-plastic ones. Sorry for my tone, but I just wrote a really long formal paper, and I don’t feel like being formal right now.
Check these sites out:
http://www.azwingchun.com/
They don’t make a plastic one, but they make some good ones. And you can see how one is made step by step. Nice people, I’ve talked to them.
http://www.woodendummy.net/intro.html
Great Lion. Again, very nice people. They make a plastic model with wooden arms and legs, for fairly cheap. You might want to check it out.
http://www.wooddummy.com (not “woodendummy”, it’s “wooddummy”)
Asheville Woodcrafters. Their website is kind of sub par, but the arms they made for me are very nice. Hey, it appears they just updated their site, I’ll have to go surf around. Btw, their prices for arms by themselves (not on a dummy) are the best I’ve ever seen. You get choice of wood, color, etc.
Stay away from Springtime Martial arts or something, they sell crap for way too much. And what the hell is that flat dummy they sell? The one thats like square arms coming out of a board? Yeah I bet that feels good to hit.
I would also avoid woodendummy.com. I dunno. Some places just give you a weird feeling.
Hope these sites helped. Trust me, you can get a good deal for $600. Just stay away from the crap out there.
Good luck.
