I know where I can buy one of those bad boys in Taiyuan. I am tempted but I don’t know where I’d put it… I’m running out of wall space except right above my bed and I don’t think I’d feel very comfortable with a monster like that hanging over my head while I slept.

We have one at our school…
… we might even have a few. There’s a weapon display rack at our school with a lot of odd pole arms. It’s mostly for decoration tho. I’ll have to ask around to see if any one can actually use it. There’s a lot of coaches there and a lot of weird stuff…

Oso, I know what you mean about the ‘sir’ thing - drives me nuts. But in the martial world, you’d be ashamed to know how many of our customers demand it. I worked in customer service for my two previous companies because they were both small, so I had to wear more hats. My last company was a martial arts company and my one before that was a sword making shop. Let me tell you it’s no picnic, customer sales in the martial world. There’s a lot of great people in the martial world - ones who’ve survived here for years - but there are a lot of newbie nutjobs and they actually drive the economy of the martial arts forward more so. What school doesn’t make a significant part of it’s profit from newbies? Same is true for supplies, of course.
I’ll start chipping on the wolf’s tooth club a little too now. I always liked that one because it’s so outrageuosly barbaric. A great villain’s weapon.
If Oso can get that seminar up, then theres a few people in NC and TN that would want to buy one from somewhere. . . .

Gene, I looked through MAM but didn’t see one. IF I can pull this off then I’d probably want to offer a package deal including the weapon and then buy the weapon in quantity. Would it be possible for MAM to source it if I had enough of a quantity to make it worth their time?
JP, the seminar is just a money thing. Jake said it wouldn’t be a problem and Master Hu would love to come down. I’ll start polling people in Jan. to see what real interest there will be. I don’t care about making money on the seminar, I just can’t afford to put any money out of pocket on it. So, I’ll need to feel like I can get the draw to cover the teachers expenses.
Hey Oso, why dont you time it around your tourney? BTW, I`m up for it, and I am sure I can bring some fellers. I just wonder if I got enough rear-end to throw that thing around…
yu shan - I’m thinking late March or early April. All I’ve told Jake is ‘spring’. I’m gonna be ‘logistic’d’ out by the time that tourney rolls around. It’s the first Sat in Feb so I want a gap between that and this thing. Networking wise, I’ve got this tourney we’re going to next month and then the one in Feb to get the word out to this CACMA group i’m working with now.

You know, I don’t think any of our makers manufacture them. I’ll have to look through our catalogs when I get the chance. We usually do our weapon shipments in a big ol’ container on the slow boat from China, and I don’t know when the last time a shipment came in was. They would be a ***** to pack and ship. Again, let me look into that a little. I have no idea if it’s something we’d carry.
To be honest, I’ve seen many different models of wolf tooth clubs on the market and they almost all suck. I’ve only seen one nice one at Shaolin forge a few years back - solid metal core with tempered steel spikes - but I’m not sure if that was a regular item. It may have just been made for display. Most of the one’s I’ve seen are wood core (which is really easy to make yourself) or hollow sheet steel (cones welded on to a cylinder). The one in the rack at our school is a wood core model.

My old teacher had a pretty generic kwan dao that someone gave him and I was messing with it one day (I don’t know a kwan dao set but one of the staff sets i know seems to fit it well) and on one of the ‘pops’ in the set I snapped the head off the shaft and sent it flying across the room…luckily I was in the school by myself at the time.

My students got me the hollow one with the spikes welded on for a Christmas present years ago. It is mounted on too lightweight a wood and wobbles, so I need to do some fixing. It IS nasty looking however. There is one thing that always puzzled me about it and Chinese thought in general. If you look at this weapon, it is hideous-sharp spikes all over, and the hand guard…is a flower.
The kuan-doa has pom-poms on it that belong on my daughter’s ice skates.
The Monk’s Spade is wearing earrings, the Tiger Fork has a pretty red bow, and most of the other waepons have tassels, scarves,etc.

If I remember it is said to have originated in Mongolia? I read that either in YJM’s weapons book or from a chinese version I have.
china’s WuLin magazine (1990’s) had a form for this weapon in it. I have it somewhere (piles and piles of stuff). pretty simple
ON video it was on one of the tapes I got from Wing Lam (a documentary series on china, (out of 5 or 6 tapes?).
But more recently saw a demo of it on a VCD but can’t remember if it was on the Xing Yi or a Taiji (its that splinter lineage of Chen style). This VCD also demo’s a long pole axe as well.

Thats the weird thing about weapons like that Oso. Everyone is like, oh, that would be cool to learn, but then it seems hard to fill up the class.
I think that’s a problem with weapon seminars in general. Sure you don’t have to buy the weapon to learn it, but I think most people would like to and that adds to the bottom line.
I think it’s Xingyi. I’ve seen a demo VCD that had that, long handle ax, a huge dai so gee, etc…
There was some video over on Cyberkwoon & I think I have them on my PC at home.
NP, yea…Right now I think that it would have to be $180-$200 at the door, less if one were to preregister…probably going to be a hard sell.
I’m gonna try to network the hell out of it to Schools within 2-3 hours…we’ll see.
