When i work out...

i get really tired after short while, and burn out and want to give up (i don’ though). Then after like a 1 minute rest i’ll get all my energy back and be able to go on a lot longer than most people.

Why is this? I’d rather not burn out in teh first place, it’s kinda embarressing. Maybe i should pace myself or something - but then i feel fine after a bit.

What kind of workout?

My only advice is
a) Try to pace yourself better
b) As long as you aren’t doing something potentially dangerous like weights (you could end up dropping the bar on yourself or something), push yourself through the burnout.

I dont know…I wasnt going to post because I didnt know…but I felt I should even though I dont know…

I am Sharky’s main man…

i sometimes feel like that when practice begins, like my lungs just dont feel like breathing, then i just make myself stick through the first 10 minutes and then i’m fine for the next hour no matter what we do.

But that’s only when i practice with a teacher, i have no will on my own  If i get tired and i CAN quit (and only i would know) then i usually do.

Free thinkers are dangerous!

eg my boxing class was split up into working out and then technique training drills later in the 2nd half of the lesson.

so in the first part

  • 10 pressups, then 10 squat thrusts then, then 10 crunches - REPEAT until eh tells us stop (then later we had to do the pressups on knucls on wooden floor)

  • continuous pad work as fast as possible until he says stop (then swap with partner)

  • continuous skipping (this goes on twice as logn as the other two stages)

This went on for half the lesson (i guess everyone is in great shape there huh?) and though simple, it is very effective. I can’t remember how long this went on for. There were no breaks - maybe 15-30 second breaks when moving onto the next thing round the circuit.

3/4 of the way through i started to feel a bit shitty and was struggling. padwork was fine, everything was fine apart from skipping. i wasn’t used to bouncing on my toes and it shagged me up. pluss the fact that i couldn’t skip and had to learn how (looked like a muppet for a bit but then got the hang of it). it was over, then we had a 5 min water break, then it was technique time, and i had loads of energy on the pads, and we did this thing where each person has a glove and a pad, and it was like starting me off into sparring, and i had loads of energy. i had loads of energy for the whole second part of the lesson.

when i left the class i had loads of energy - i felt like going for a run (but didn’t, heh).

ho hum.

no it’s not like 10 minutes i usually last much longer than that.

i was thinking maybe it was just a hard workout. but this happens to me all the time.

and i don’t give up, i just have to slow down for a bit. then i’ll pick it up again once my muscles/lungs have got used to the new work rate, if you will.

What it very well could be…

is an improper warm up…

What does your warm up consist of? Do you have 1?

Warm ups should do just like the name says, work the muscles slightly, so they are used to being moved…warm ups should never get you fatigued or short of breath, then that can get you over fatigued as well…

Going from NO or Low intensity to high intensity is bad…not only is it bad because you wont have endurance as much, but it burns the muscles even more than if you were warmed up, and kills off the reserve muscle fibers as well(needed for increased growth in strength)

And i feel this is on topic…(sorta)…but going from high intensity, to NO intensity is also very bad…you should always have a proper cool down…(im not sayin u dont, jes incase, i know several people who dont)…

Try this n tell me if it helps on a seperate thread…

Warm up:(For upper body)
Do jes a little shadow boxing(or practice your forms/attacks if u study an art of somesort)…practice slowly at first, u want to “GRADUALLY” increase the intensity, once u are slightly warmed up, u can throw in an occasional slow pushup(just 1 or 2) then continue to the forms, (still slow, accuracy is the key)…and gradually u will feel yourself enter a new focus point, and you’ll know ur warmed up…then u can workout with whatever your upper body workout was, again gradually increase the intensity…do some arm swings in there, and push your arm back in each direction(like ur elbowing someone behind you in the head, then body, arms, knees)…but dont hold the stretches, those are called static stretches and they “Decrease” overall muscle strength and coordination(trust me)…get them used to doing the motions u’ll be performing…

Warm up:(For lower body)
This one is simple, jes do a little jogging in place…again, start slowly and gradually increase…do knee raises, and any static stretch u would hold, just do it twice without holding it, just to loosen up

Warm up:(For both)
This is for when ur gonna spar or something, jumprope is good(start slow)…and a little jogging in place and some shadow boxing would be fine, u want to have ur energy for the match…unless ur going for endurance

Intensity: Jes in case u didn’t know…

You should ALWAYS practice forms first…if you practice forms when ur fatigue, your coordination will be off, and you may learn to remember the move “incorrectly…permanantly”…

Cool down: Do a light jog just to wear down the remaining muscle fibers safely, and do some static stretches…these are what those are for…and trust me, you’ll feel alot better than if you did anything else

IF im wrong about ANY of this info. tell me, i’ll be glad to back myself up, OR experiment the way u have in mind and give it a try…remember

“True victory is giving all of yourself without regret”-Ryu

“Your best move is the move you regret not doing”-Fei Long

“Are you prepared to fight today? Someone else is as we speak”-Apprentice

Warming up is the hardest part. Once you are warmed up it is fine.

thanks apprentice . we did warm up. maybe it’s just a bad spot in my engine calibration.

i’m gonna buy a skipping rope tomorrow and try and get to a decent boxing standard level of fitness.

thanks guys

yea warming up is the hardest part.
i don’t know why that happens sharky, but it seems like you got your answer already.
i know that while i’m doing circle walking, the first 10 minutes are the toughest. i just keeping pushing myself and get through it and then i’m good to go.
how’s the rhyming sharky?

‘either you like reincarnation or the smell of carnations’

i had to do very similar circuits last summer, and i made it, but felt like i was going to die the entire time. at one poing during the speed drills everything went orange and i almost passed out. my endurance is sh!t, so maybe im not the best person to post on this, but i don’t think what you are talking about is that uncommon.

my friends who run always said that the first couple times you will get to the point where you feel like it is impossible to go any further, but if you push on a little more you’ll hit your second wind and that’s when your endurance training really begins. after a while it’s not that dramatic but they said that they can still feel it when they shift gears. maybe that’s all it is.

where’s my beer?

one answer

water, water and more water. at least a half gallon per day (two litres or so), more on those days when you just work your bum off.

and don’t slack on the days off. it’s just as important then as on days on.

and try to get at least 20 or so oz. (2/3 litre) in you within your first few hours of being awake to recover what you lost sweating and exhaling while sleeping.

for some, this may be so rudimentary that you’re so insulted that you’re already plotting my doom. for others who don’t know this, just drink your darn water.

-rtb

another answer - your mind. If you are in shape, your mind will start to give even though your body can handle the work. For emaple, when I run, I may start to feel tired at around a mile to a mile and a half. I want to stop, but I don’t, I just slow my pace a little. If I am perfectly able of making it through the run, but my mind doesn’t want to. Once you decide to keep going - look past the tiredness and the length of time you’ve been going - focus on something positive, like finishing - then it’s not so bad. Our testing lasts for several hours for this very reason - it’s to make us mentally tough. You have to endure the whole test and not quit, in addition to perfoming techniques correctly, which is rough after you’ve done an hour of calisthenics…

Knackered after 10 minutes!

Hi Eddie,
I have often suffered from the complete burnout during class. But after 10 mins or so it’s gets better!
I believe it has something to do with the amount of simple carbohydrates available for your muscles to use as energy.
Like the old second wind theory!
When you initially start the workout your body is cold like your car in the morning, so you run on full choke.
After ten minutes your metabolism has started to work at a higher more efficient rate, so you can turn the “choke” off and push yourself a bit further. So the answer is to warm up incrementally, gradually increase the load on your heart/lungs until you’re running at optimum temperature, then push yourself until you hit the “powerband” and away you go!!!

More knuckle push ups! Yea!!!

Colin…

Do you drink enough water throughout the day?

Dehydration can lead to crashing or feeling off your game.

Do you eat enough of what your body needs throughout the day?

Too few calories, protein, fat, and/or carbs will also make you lose your steam quick.

I would think that if it was something like dehydration, he’d stay tired. He said that he recovers and then makes it through the rest of the class, lasting longer than anyone else.

SevenStar,

I he said he regained his energy after the water break. I assumed he drank water during the break. Perhaps he didn’t. If not, then it’s probably not dehydration as he would stay tired–as you noted.
