(although that is good on the sand… speshly at night with a cool breeze gently whistling across your buttocks, but I digress)…
Where was I?
Oh yeah - try to hold your stance against the waves and turn your body to offer least resistance to the movement of the water, etc.
I’ve had some funny looks, but it’s very good training. [/B]
I will have to try it - resisting the waves that is
naw, we’d be alchololics if we drank before or during class.
training in water is fun, had a bad experience w/ trying to root in the sand though…I sunk to about mid thigh which put me about chin deep in the water…more a testatment to the liquidity of the sand than my fantastic rooting ability…still a bit sketchy till someone helped me out…laughing of course.
I drink water constantly, and whenever I get thirsty during class (3 hours).
As for training in water, when I was a kid I used to practice in my pool all the time. Now, I use Hsing-I stepping in the surf, use it to hold my position or bust through waves in the shorebreak. It’s not something I’ve been taught, just fun to do and to test my connections.
Well actually thats the thing. If you are drinking cold water, your body feals that, and thinks it needs to warm it up, producing more heat, so it doesn’t do diddly as far as cooling you down. I drink cool water (not ice cold) before and during class. We typically go 90 minutes with our class, and if I’m leading we have a water break whenever I’m thirsty .
As far as training in water, I used to do tan tui in the water, it was good training, got some weird looks though ..
You crazy australians… As for “rooting” in the sand… Careful not to make an organ grinder of yourself. Sand does not make for more “sensation”, at least not pleasantly.
Re: cold water - Colder water contracts lungs, contracts veins. Warmer water dialates veins, and lungs, thus increasing blood flow, and oxygen in the blood.
Training in the pool - Havent done it lately, but Ive heard that swimming can make you lose speed on land?
Although its great cardio…
