These are the honors listed for Mimi Chan, the daughter of Grandmaster Chan Pui of Wah Lum Kung Fu. I wonder if these credentials are in fact real, because I cannot find any record of the 1998 Eagle Claw International Tournament in San Fran.

When we visited the Chans in Florida, Mimi took care of my daughters, who were little at the time. Now, they’re all growed up and have a rock band-The Kung-Fu Girls. Who knows? Maybe when they’re famous, it’ll be like saying, “I used to babysit for Elvis.”
She was awarded traditional grand champion at 98 eagle cup for having won all the divisions she competed in, but did not compete in the eagle cup competition itself which on the womens side was won by Phung Lee.
Mimi is quite authentic and the list is accurate.. She is a gifted KungFu Ambassador.. she is strong, fast, skilled and well-trained by the system’s lineage-holder (and her Father).. i trained at the Temple for 12 years and watched Mimi grow into a remakable Martial Artist.. a particularly good memory was when Chan Pui pitted Mimi against Dean Wong in race through 36 hands.. i won’t reveal the winner, but it was an inspirational performance from both.. Mimi showed “real” depth..
Yes, Mimi was the model for Mulan.. her movements were digitized for the animation..
It will be interesting to see how Wah Lum reshapes itself after Chan Pui crosses over..
So would all agree that although some of the tournaments are not to found on the internet, it is still possible they are legitimate? The reason why I’m so suspicious is that I was in a rogue Oom Yung Doe school for a while, and now have many doubts about the legitimacy of different martial arts/artists.

It is good to be skeptical, especially coming from your background. Have you been to the Yahoo groups discussion forum on OYD yet? Also, there is a book out called Herding the Moo which is about the inner cult life of OYD, have you read it?
As for Wah Lum, they are a legit school and have the respect of the over all Chinese martial arts community.

Yes. I have been present over at the Oom Yung Doe discussion group for quite some time and have learned an extensive amount about the cult. But you do think that although a tournament or other competition may not be listed it may still exist?

Yes, it can exist and just not be on the internet.
1998 Eagle Claw International Tournament sounds like something Lilly Lau would have put together. I’d contact her, or someone in her organization and see if they can provide you with tournament results.
yes. There are many, many tournaments that have never been on the net. The net is a wonderful source for research, but it still has its gaps. Rather than trusting the net, I would instead listen to the voices of the Chinese Martial Arts Community (Mo-Lum) and then go in and watch some classes, and speak to Mimi herself. Listen to your heart.
Thanks. You donl’t need to do that though. Was just wondering. This is the problem with finding out your old school is OYD in disguise. I now go around testing school’s legitimacy, when most probably are.

We reported the The 1st International Eagle Cup Kung Fu Tournament and Master’s Exhibition 1998 in our Oct Nov 98 issue. It was June 20-21. Mimi Chan won the Women’s Traditional Grand Champion. It was right about when Mulan was released and everyone was talking about Mimi back then. That was a great tournament. Suzy Chan (Mimi’s mom) was on the microphone - I have a distinct memory of that because she handed me the mike when my old Sifu, Wing Lam, and my classmates, did an iron body demo. I ran a table for Wing Lam at that tournament. Hard to believe it was almost a decade ago. That Master’s demo was excellent.
