For fear of sounding like an ignoramus… What was with the stick slapping?

I think it is this. But can’t comment on something that I dunno.

The first link was a good clip about what Bruce Lee thought about the concept of growth over time and no definite limits.

Attributes or certain solutions or functions are more important to develop for each person.

So they are not limited to techniques or styles.

etc etc.

:D:)

Oh! It’s Silat; ok. I don’t know much about that art. It was this week’s focus on ā€œThe Human Weaponā€ on the History Channel, but I missed it due to falling asleep very early. Good thing they re-run the previous week’s episode right before the current one. I can catch it next Sunday.

I never knew Bruce Lee was into Silat…

Im not sure Bruce Lee was into Silat, specifically. Inosanto was always big into the Filipino arts (where Bruce seemed to favor fencing) and to some degree, introduced Bruce Lee to them. Subsequently, many of todays JKD schools teach what is called Inosanto blend Kali, as well as the Illustrisimo and Lacoste systems of Kali/Escrima…And of course, some JKD schools dont teach any FMA! =)

iam pretty sure thats were most of lee’s foot work came from is silat

i thought it was fencing and boxing, but im no expert.

I goofed, that weeks Human Weapon was on Savate not Silat. Though one of the Savate masters did say that Bruce rather like the push kick thing they do to jam an opponant’s lead leg.

I have that video, and his book, etc.etc.

I did don’t recall much mention of silat at all. He didn’t bring it with him to America from HK.

He did learn a bit of Savate and Fencing and makes mention of those arts’ footwork styles–as well as boxing.

Bruce got his footwork from boxing and fencing.

i know for a fact that he got foot work from silat also

What was with the stick slapping?

Eskrima? is that what your asking?
Eskrima? is that what your asking?
Yes, I thought that looked like Eskrima, too. Are Eskrima and silate similar arts? Someone earlier in the thread said that’s what they thought it was. I knew Bruce trained with people who did Philipino arts but didn’t think he’d ever incorporated any weapons work into JKD. The guy I train wrestling from uses JKD for his stand up and he said he chose that because it gets rid of useless elements to what he needs it for. As he’s into MMA, I figure weapons work is useless.

Of course, this is pure conjecture; I’ve never asked him if he ever had the chance to train sticks in JKD.
Yes, I thought that looked like Eskrima, too. Are Eskrima and silate similar arts? )
Controversial question - there are similarities between JKD (i.e. Inosanto taught) Eskrima and JKD (i.e. Inosanto taught) Silat esp. in relation to the entries and sweeps/takedowns

However many pure escrima people question the authenticity of JKD Escrima and many pure Silat people question the authenticity of JKD Silat.

Then there is the fact that Indonesia and the Phillipines both being large archipelagos have many many variations of their respective arts (maybe as many variations as the term ā€˜kung fu’ does in china with CLF at one end and Tai chi at the other).

Bruce wasn’t a big fan of FMA. They say he hated stick fighting and probably Silat too.

Lee’s footwork came from fencing, savate and boxing.

Bruce was introduced to FMA by Dan, but neither one knew about silat at that time. Dan didn’t explore silat until years after Bruce’s death.

JKD footwork came from boxing, Muay Thai, and fencing. There was no silat influence… more than likely, there was also no FMA influence either.

i have met some old timers that showed him silat foot work so say what you will .you can also see it when he fights its as plain as day and iam not saying this because i have done some silat

Dale,

Dan’s silat is from de thoars brothers and Herman Suwanda right?

Also do you know why Dan never went to the Phillipines to train?

Which fights of Bruce are you refering to. Movie fights? If so which films and which specific footwork does he use from Silat In your opinion.

Those are the ones I know about

I wasn’t aware that Dan never went there to train… maybe it was because he had access to so much FMA instruction here.
