Too much power? Too much speed

My Sigung and Sifu often tell me that I use too much power in some parts of my forms or I try to do a technique too fast. And it makes my forms a little sloppy. I agree with them. Does anyone have this problem?

my brother does…

but he doesn’t listen to me so i stopped bothering…practice them a little slower, there is someones signature that states the solution to this(Forgot who’s)…

“Through strength will come gentleness, and through gentleness will come strength”

I’ve taken that deeply, as should you to fix your problem

I sometimes do that to

Its an annoying trait i know.
I honestly think it comes from being fustrated and over eager.
At least with me anyway, I know if im in a bad mood or even if im not focused ill rocket though forms without properly thinking of what im doing with each movement. To me i think im doing the right thing couse im moving quickly and using force. To everyone else i just look like im waving my hands around REALLY fast.
Have a look at my new quote i put it in this morning as its what im trying to do now with my training.
Make sure you think what every movement does as your doing it, make as if someone is attacking you with every move. That doesnt mean go fast it means time it like something was actualy there.
Im still having the same problem but im getting though it slowly.

go slow so you have time to see where the power and speed come from.

What form are you doing, Richard?
Do you know the Pek Kwar #3?

I haven’t learned Pek Kwar #3 yet. I watched my Sifu do it a few times and If I don’t learn how to balance power and speed, I’ll die half way through it. I use too much power at the wrong time in Yin Yeung. However, my Mai Chung is ok.

Try this as an experiment: for one week, practice your form daily but perform the whole thing from beginning to end in slow motion…no fast parts at all. After one week, see what that does for the technical precision and coordination of your form (not to mention your speed). If you like the results (hint: you will), feel free to make this a regular part of your forms practice.

that’s what i said.

I think it is funny. I use to go to tournaments a lot and most of the guys out there does this A LOT worse than me, yet no one can relate. Most guys out there have no real power, except for some southern guys.

I know what to do to fix it. I want to be perfect at my forms. I was just wondering does anyone have this problem.

Richard, I’ve seen you do the Ying Yeung Fist and I think your very good at it…=P Sifu Chan says you do the tornado kick very well. Oh have you seen the new uniforms for tspk?

i don’t have forms, but i try to master individual movements in the same way.

Hey thanks, but I need more practice. The funny thing is that I pulled my groin on both sides 3 weeks before the tournament. It hurt like hell doing bow stances and jump kicks.

No I haven’t seen them yet. How do they look.

The uniforms look like the ones you performed at Lily Lau’s tournament.
So have you done any Pek Kwar conditioning yet?

Yes,
I have a tendency to rush through my forms in order to attain speed but what ends up happening is the motions are not powerful and succinct.

I have started to go through my forms now alot slower and concentrate on power not speed, from this I will attain speed over years of practice.

I face this problem…

I think this is a very common thing.

This problem really surfaces for me when I am practicing and my uke resists from his center. It is different then when a strong person resists your technique with their muscles…those who resist with balance rather then strength can be very hard to throw. You have to be very technically precise to execute against them, and I find I once again need to slow way down and focus on the key point of the technique (which are explained but really need to be dicovered through experimentation).

In kata, I no longer have this problem because my experience has beat this lesson into me over and over :).

going slow like taichi helps ALOT, like everyone said.
it helped me a lot with my shuai chiao forms and drills.
make sure to keep the movements smooth and flowing, again, like taichi.
i actually prefer doing forms and shuai chiao drills and forms like this.
i am able to maintain better body mechanics.
