Teaching deaf people?

Does any of you have experience in teaching deaf people martial arts? I have two deaf guys to teach at the moment, so I’d like to hear your experiences and I could use some tips too.

I don’t know any sign language and they don’t really know how to read lips, so pen and paper seems to be my only weapon.

Well, never done it, but given that kung fu is a physical thing (in the first instance anyway) can’t they just watch what you do and follow along?

Kung Fu teachings are highly tactile.

Being deaf is definitely not a limitation here.

Teach them “oldstyle” IE: No talking and follow the teacher.

if you need to give them literature, let them take it home with them.

The rest can be quite intuitive, however, you’re favourite Koans will not hold water

peace

corporal punishment is your best friend here.

beat them vehemently every time they make a mistake and they’ll be the best in the class in no time.

its also pretty cool that you can make fun of them as much as you want and they’ll never know.

i think thats beautiful. A deaf person who can kick arse is the best thing, teach cruel people a lesson.

GDA, you have a wicked sense of hmour, but its still a sense of humour.

Tae Li;)

hey premier, you used to always be in the KFO chat room then you left to join the army right? What happened?

I had a deaf student for a while as kung lek suggested let them watch you but I did ask for a chart that has the sign language on it they can get them at their school and while it took a little time to learn how to spell it worked quite well. It will teach you patients and improve your teaching skills tremendously, good for you

Yeah.. I guess the first thing I’ll have to do is to order them to the front row. And show the main points in the techniques slowly and over and over again. It’s just that normally I give a lot information verbally and these guys don’t really get it. ****.. ****load of typing to do =) Not to mention they don’t get my jokes!
