Pai Lum Tao Video Clips

Iron dummy? What’s the point?
“Oh yeah? Well my school’s dummy is made of IRON!! So there!”
-Seriously, what’s the point of an iron dummy? Isn’t a wooden one strong enough for you? I was always under the impression that people who slammed the dummy hard were doing it wrong. The dummy is a good training tool, but it’s not meant to be hammered. I’m assuming that that is why it’s made of Iron. Maybe I’m wrong. Not trolling here, just curious. Where I’m from if someone says that you’ve got arms hardened from a mook jong it’s an insult, not a compliment.

“Forfeit the game
Before somebody else takes you out of the frame
And puts your name to shame
Cover up your face
You can’t run the race
The pace is too fast,
You just won’t last!”

Hey logic what’s Don like in person? Is he related to Glen Wilson?

It seems to me we people try to figure out another kungfu school they do it all wrong. There are DIFFERENT styles people. Just because the Taichi they do is different from the TaiChi you do doesn’t make it bad Taichi for them. I also heard(can’t remember where) that the “double wieght” in Taichi is refering somehow to your force in relation to your opponents and there is double wieghted stances in Taichi. As far as the Mook Yan Jong goes, some schools like wing chun use it to develop technique and don’t try to build the arms on it but other schools of southern shaolin use it just to build the arms for the techniques they do. So the “you should” and “that’s wrong” type comments are just a matter of opinon.

ShaolinDynasty

Yes, it is truth that kung fu comes in different “shapes and sizes”, but in kung fu there are basic truths. Basic things that kung fu styles share, and those guys don’t have those truths.

Actually Shaolindynasty, it is kung fu combined with karate.Don’t get me wrong the kung fu part is legit.I knew about Pai Lum since a long while back since the Grandmaster’s headquarters is in my home town Orlando.Even if it is kung fu I don’t understand how the fact that they have a katana passed your mind and not made you wonder if somewthing was wrong.Katana is Japanese and no way did they have that in China. You may be right about diference in training but katanas are of Japanese origin. They’re way cool and shiny I’ll give you that.

The man responsible for bringing this style to the U.S. is the late Daniel K. Pai,a good friend of that Dillman karate guy who does pressure point fighting.Daniel Pai is Hawaiian with Chinese ancestry. One of his ancestors (possibly his Greatgrand aunt) knew the white crane style and another knew tiger or dragon, don’t know which one but I’m sure it was on of those two.Anyway to make along story short it got up to Daniel Pai who was like 3/4 or 1/8 Chinese and was taught through his family.I think it was Pai or his dad that got the idea to combine it with karate thus we see the katana in their forms.

Half a year ago a man with an inquiring mind said he was going to learn Pai Lum and if he should take it.I told him to be careful since he might encounter some contraversy but if it was what he wanted then he should stick with it and work hard to become the best that he can be and not get discouraged.

I only know a few Cantonese words but doesn’t Pai Lum mean system forest?

Pai=system/style
Lum=forest

Personaly, i mean no ofense, but that katana form was just weird. Maybe we should get a iaido guy to see what he thinks about it.

There is a katana in chinese styles but its a lot bigger and its called not called “katana” they call it “miao dao”, but doesnt look anything like what was on the video clip. The miao dao was made specifcly to fight japanese pirates, i cant remember the whole story but its somewhere on http://www.swordforum.com

Xebsball if you look at it the katana form has some gim like movements.I can definitely see the fusion of Japanese and Chinese arts with that form. It’s weird compared to other ung fu forms but it’s very innovatice.

I don’t agree. It is crappy for a katana form.

Yeah, Katanas are japanese. Correct me if I am wrong but don’t some schools of Hung Gar have a spanish style sword in their curriculum? This is modern times and Kungfu is going to fuse with other styles even non chinese forms, there is no harm in that. The katana form was different but kinda cool. I also recongise some of the techniques in one of the forms from the dragon section of hung gar 5 animals, although they were a little different. Oh and by the way, those “certain truths” in kungfu don’t exsist China is a big country to think all the hundreds of styles have similar principles is not realistic. Some styles have not a damn thing in common. So for those of you quick to judge techniques based on your experience in a few styles at most…you may want to rethink your position.

The guy doing the double sabre thing was decent. Looked neato atleast.

ugh yeah, that katana form is terrible though. When he pulls it out he’s basically giving the sword to his enemy. I counted 5 times during the form where he could’ve been easily disarmed..

With the exception of the “tai chi”, I thought all those forms looked pretty good. There was a lot of energy in them, and I quite liked the fluidity of the dao movements. There are some pretty tough critics on this forum, methinks. Maybe its bacause everyone on that site seems to be a sifu…?

Soy, I’m completely unfamiliar with the use of katanas… is there another mpeg available that demonstrates a form you would consider more technically correct?

BTW, I was kinda impressed by the forms because after reading the information on the website, I thought it sounded like a big wank too. Actually, the music and voiceovers were pretty stupid… although the clips looked good to me, I don’t think I’d actually want to be a member of that organisation.

I have this great clip of a Iaido demonstration from Japan with an old Japanese man with a bald head…

I can’t remember the site where I got it though :frowning:
Sorry Daedalus.

I’ll try to find it maybe.

I need to start a collection of TCC mpegs like this then when I feel like I suck I can review these.

Sharky, I should expect this level of immaturity from you after seeing your post titled “Hm.” regarding the woman that lives next door to you. I think everyone who unfortuneatly read that post is a bit more ignorant now for doing so. - Spectre

All i wanted was some RICE CAKES! Now? WE MUST BATTLE.

bok Lung is white dragon

pai lum is forest system

pai means style/system/school/

pak/bot/pa means 8

bak means north

anyway, it’s all typical english spelling of cantonese, but pai lum is definitely meaning forest style.

My Alma Mater!

Hey,

I started out doing Pai Lum about 15 years ago. ((Damn, I feelz old.)) Looking back on it, I’d have to say that it was the best school in my area. All the guys I studied with were cool, and many of them were police officers. It really did feel like a family. Good guys, and a good intro to the martial arts. I’m still trying to find out what happened to my old teacher, so if anyone knows where Chuck Morano in CT is, let me know.

Now, would I go back to Pai Lum after studying what I am now? Not a chance.

Merciless is Mercy.
