May + June 2015

The table of contents for the May + June 2015 issue is now online!

 Foondastik!

I must pick this up at my Kenosha Woodmans’ or Pic and Save!

 OK Taiji guys. What is the purpose of the arm extension with “beak-hand” as shown by young Master Yang on the cover of the new issue. I won’t practice anything Kungfu if it doesn’t make perfect sense. Thanks in advance for anything beyond speculation. (I sense it is used in a hook throw).

 Available at magazine stands yet? Will look for the new issue tomorrow afternoon.

 Picked up the issue today and read the cover story interview and also the article about Taiji training/tiger handling. Great reads!

We got a lot for this issue. More than ever.

BTW, PalmStriker, thanks for your kind words on this issue. That was a fun cover story as Master Yang Jun has a fascinating perspective on it all. We’ll be posted the cover story online for free, probably next week, and after that, I have a supplementary article based on the rest of that interview, material that I had to cut out of the cover story due to length. Glad you were also amused by that Tiger & Tai Chi piece. That was an unusual one for us, but irresistible for the tiger photos alone.

I’m sure some readers will take offense from some of Yang Jun’s opinions on the modern definition of Taiji. They shouldn’t. What he says is actually quite positive and constructive.

There is one mistake in the article that need correction.

In the article it mentioned Dong Yinjie and said “Dong Yinjie (1891–1960 ), one of my grandfather’s senior disciples”. This is incorrect. Since the article is an interview of Yang Jun, it seems to imply Dong Yinjie is the student of Yang Zhenduo. In fact, Dong YinJie is one of the senior disciples of Yang Chengfu (), and is the main person who help Yang Chengfu put together his famous Yang Style Tai Chi book “”. Dong’s grandsons are now have practice in Los Angeles (Tung Kai Ying ) and Hawaii (Dong Zeng Cheng ).

The correct statement should be “Dong Yinjie (1891–1960 ), one of my great grandfather’s senior disciples”

That was a direct quote, taichifan

I suspect it was an artifact of Yang Jun being ESL. His English is quite good, but he still makes the occasional slip. I’m always at odds when it comes to correcting direct quotes. In fact, with this interview, there was much discussion about whether it was appropriate to include all of the parenthesized articles like [the] and [a] as Chinese speakers generally drop those when speaking English because articles like these don’t exist in Chinese. My general stance is to remain as true to what was actually said as possible. But you are correct - in this case, perhaps I should have qualified that statement somehow or just inserted the ‘great’.

Anyway, here’s today’s fb meme.
