Hi all I have a student who will be in Chicago for 6 months who is looking to train in a southern kung fu. Preferably a CLF or a Lama school.
Where in Chicago?
The NG family in Chinatown have a good rep. CLF - I’ve only met them in passing…
There are also various Lama offshoots from Wai Lun Choi around town…
My student will be staying about 30 minutes from the city so anywhere within a 30 minute radius from the city would be fine thanks.
Oh it also has to be a kwoon that doesn’t mind an exchange student since some kung fu schools require a blood oath before youre accepted:D
Hi Mas if you could posibly get me an adress or web site that would be great thanks.
If your student is interested in traditional northern shaolin i have read that this school is very good. I have no way of knowing if its true but it might be worth checking out.

Thanks guys keep the referals coming, but please make sure in southern shaolin.
Nothing against Northern it’s just that he will only be there for 6 months and switching to Northern may be counter productive.
I train here
It’s choy lay fut and also has some lama forms mixed in the curriculum.
Mas judt- who did you meet?
Years ago at one of Dr.Wu’s tournaments the son, I think, was there with some students to demonstrate. No one joined the San Da style competition, but they talked a good game, and looked good too. Very friendly as well. Seemed like good guys - certainly seemed like the type that would join the fighting, but were just checking it out…
That sounds perfect hopefully the kwoon is closed to him. He is staying aproximately 30 minutes outside the city.
30 minutes outside the city can be anywhere. is he North, South, East or 30 minutes west?
Is that 30 minutes from down town, or 30 minutes from the outer edge of the city?
Mas judt- Yeah, we have guys that regularly train and compete in sanshou/sanda.
GC- Is your student going to be using public trans? If so there should be no problem, the school is very accessable by train.
RD- Setttle down. Anytime somebody mentions traveling in the city you get all excited
he will have a car, and I will see him in class today to get the exact adress that he will be staying at.
Either way, 30 minutes by car is cake.
Hey SD I just spoke to my student the name of the town is Botavia, does that ring a bell???
Batavia? He’s out in the styx, Bro. He’s more like a good hour from the city than 1/2 hour. The closest good school that I know of is the Golden Mountain. It’s Long Fist, but it’s good stuff, real good stuff. A lot of people here can vouch for the Mountain. Dr. Brian Wu was also teaching some Shuai Chiao around there. I don’t think they were private classes, but i don’t know if they’re still going on. There’s also some decent BJJ in that are. I came up on the South Side, so there’s probably more in the area I’m not familiar with.
Almost forgot. I use to go to a private Tai Ji group that would meet up in Wheaton every Sunday. William CC Chen/Tao Ping Siang stuff. They work with Nathan Menaged from Ohio a lot.
I have a freind that teaches Hung Gar very close to there in Aurora
Batavia is 40 minutes to the city limits at best, 1-1/2 to downtown.
So I live in ****ing kankakee. It takes me 2 hours to get to the school by train. 1 hour by car (before the dan ryan construction now its 1 1/2 hours). Trust me it’s worth it.
On the weekend training can go between 3 to 4 hours. So it’s not like you are traveling for an hour each way to train for 45 mins:rolleyes:
People in chicago wine whenever it takes more than 5 minutes to get anywhere from their house
