Kung Fu used in Wrestling...

Yeah…I am cross training,I am becoming a wrestler.
Well I think I can use my wing chun when I am wrestling, standing up mostly.I have used it on the ground also.
Having a strong structure in wing chun really helps when some one tries to grab you and then you redirect them.I am not that great at wing chun and it seems to do a great deal for me.

What do you guys think of using your kung fu when wrestling?

btw just out of curiosity, i hear “wrestling” all the time, assuming it refers to greco/roman wrestling, is it something else? (i’m talking about the sh!t taught in colleges and such). What are the rules? Do you have to wear spandex (i remember thinking that looked gayer then richard simmons when i saw it in some show). Basicly what’s the point of wrestling? Doesnt sound like it’s to submit the other guy.

Free thinkers are dangerous!

The goal of wrestling is to pin your opponents shoulders to the mat in a specific hold, or win on points by technique, reversals, etc.
Wrestling the way it is done in college is possibly one of the MOST effective forms of fighting in my opinion. College wrestlers are incredibly strong, powerful, quick, agile, and they can place you in positions where you are completely unable to move, etc.
Not someone I want to mess with. I’ve worked out with many wrestlers in my day.
They are awesome atheletes. I’m not trying to harp on it, but you have to give credit where credit is due.

yes I have to wear spandex and yes I am talking about the stuff they teach in colledge.

Ryu…right on chap…

This isnt a tip or anything more of a right on mj

if your into wc right now because of the coolness of trapping ones arms and unhinging 1sjaw
then use your wrestling to give you quicktime martial intention-Right like you guys have to go rounds and test strentgh&timing similar to a Armwrestle
now if i was studying wc i wouldnt spar as quick as a highschooll-college wrestleing match "many pulled tendons and unhinged elbows-nowhatimsaying…
so get into IM THE CHAMPION mode with your wrestling it will make your wing chun dummy work that more on point and for real
KNOW TIPS==JUST BIGGING YOU UP
stay safe

MJ,

The conditioning training of wrestling alone will be priceless, and can only help your Wing Chun on that front.

Diego…Thanks man,and I dont focus on just trapping.I go with what I feal from my oponant.

Watchman…thanks…and have you wrestled?

Many consider wrestling to be the single most useful base you can have for mixed martial arts.

no-doubt

but tying1s elbows and unhinging his jaw is a pretty fun night-out

MJ,

IF you consider one year on my junior high school’s varsity team, then yes, I have wrestled.

whats is like?
I heard the practices are down right crazy and they work you till you cant move anymore…
When I heard this I said…sounds like a great deal of fun to me…

Truthfully, all I can remember about the training was loads of running, and doing plyometric drills until I puked.

You’d be better off asking Knifefighter about specific training questions on this issue.

Ripped!!!

I just remember the guys on the high school wrestling team were ripped! Skinny little buddy of mine turned into a mini Arnold Schwarzanegger (sp??). Got lots of girls (pretty ones!) and he was right around 110lbs.

The entire team protected him. No one messed with him. I wrestled him a few times and had my ass handed to me once on the ground (where he took me every time!).

You will get into great shape! Add your WC to that and become a great all around MA!

Godzilla

Well when I wrestled it the practices usually went like this.

-15 mins stretching

-1 hr conditioning or hell as we called it. Extremely anerobic with emphisis on explosive power, high heart rate and sprinting.

-1 hr technique and drill work whether it was takedowns, matwork etc.

-45 mins full out wrestling, sometimes we concentrated on throws, others it was groundwork and sometimes it was everything.

My coach went a little hard on us but in the end it really helped us in the tournaments. If there are any Iowa Hawkeyes hear, I hear that their practiceswere the most intense in the country. I’d love to hear how theirs went.

Check out some of the Shuai Chiao websites. There you will get more infor on how wrestling is integrated into some of the other kung fu styles. I guess my idea is to throw them to the ground with force (the ground isn’t as forgiving:)) and then kick, punch, or lock them into submission. The idea of throw is also applied to throwing them off balance (tai chi) enough to beat the apply other techniques. The locking isn’t usually a joint lock.. more rather a skin, muscle, hair, joint lock.. kinda whatever u got. Shuai Chiao trains to attack muscle groups to tear and uproot the balance of the individual.. all depending on what the situation calls for. In sport, we play to just throw someone to the ground (easy to judge.. if your standing then the point goes to you).. without “much” joint manipulation.. but thats just what I think..

hope this helps

keep em commin…

You will probably become extremely STRONG!!! I not kidding…I never wrestled in HS and recently join up with a wrestling club to get a good WRESTLING BASE…there’s a difference between weight lifting strenght and what wrestlers term as MAT STRENGTH. MAT STRENGTH deals with leverage and immobalizing an opponent…riding him…basically putting him in very bad positions. I would have to say WING CHUN will not really help u much in WRESTLING…BUT goddamn u’ll be stronger than ever before wrestling wise!

Ahhh Legend..but your forgetting the ground and pound aspects of MMA…
