JKD's direction since Bruce Lee's death.

I actually enjoyed Richardson’s articles. I can understand the problem with too much R and not enough D, but I think it’s good that some people make the journey and relate it. And I always got the impression that he really enjoyed what he was doing, and just wanted to share that.

I haven’t read any of his articles in a while, so I don’t know what they’re like now. Martial arts mags actually hurt my brain. With the exception of KFQG, of course.

And yes, I’m a major kiss up.

Yeah, I agree. I’m glad there are guys out there who do seek out new things. And I think we all benefit from at least the knowledge that there’s even such a thing as zulu stickfighting, for example.

That’s why I’m inclined to regard that as an actual ‘branch’ of JKD. The research is an important part of that process. As is the love of sharing the findings. But based on Richardson’s own comments, I think he felt like he’d strayed too far into theory.

But as I said, I do believe he’s a sincere advocate of JKD. His training priorities might shift as time goes by. But he’s still doing it.

Kempo before JKD! hmmm? O.K., Within JKD, explored into FMA. Perhaps found it so new and interesting and beautiful that he’s still exploring-ish.

If FMA Was found w/i JKD then yes , not previous primary.

However, if FMA was his first major exploration and he is still there, perhaps he at least found FMA and it impressed him and Used that as His, Base (nucleus) from which to JKD.

Hopefully, Not trying to prove prior say as correct (merely letting it be known). As to your recent pointing-out, merely going from there. :~>

No Know,

This is mostly based on my recollections from Inosanto’s two books on JKD and FMA. But I’m pretty sure that he was introduced (or perhaps reintroduced) to FMA during his time with Lee. And it stuck with him.

That said, I don’t think it precludes what you state in the last paragraph. I think FMA resonated deeply enough with him that it did become his nucleus for JKD. (Coupled with the modified wing chun, I suppose.)

Anyway, I’m strictly being an armchair historian here. So apply salt liberally.

Just posting once more to force Apoweyn to quote and reply.

And KL, were you agreeing with my assessment of Richardson, or that I’m a kiss up, or that KFQG is the readable kung fu magazine?

That’s it. I’m taking my ball and going home. :frowning:

Edit: Forgot the quote

I’m about to hamburger in the kitchen. I might expect to salt quite liberally both sides.

I hopefully take all concepts with a comprehension of the speakers likely background; from where they might get and to where they might be going…

IOW (in other words) liberal grains of salt taken…(hopefully enough for you to keep with you when I post or speak-ish.~.

Ap & KL, thanks. Pretty enlightening.

I didn’t know DI was a student of EP.

KL, from my minimal research on BL I came to a similar conclusion about his depth of understanding of a traditional art. I might be wrong in this but the number that sticks in my head is “2” as in total number of years BL trained in WC. I feel like it must have been longer but I don’t know.

IMO/IME the basics of any system/style can seem very structured and limiting but that every good teacher seeks to help a student eventually focus on what works for them out of the entire “library” of the system. When I did hung gar the concepts associated with crane, leopard & snake just didn’t fit me physically and I found them harder to play. But, my teacher still made me train them for the same initial period of time as tiger and dragon which I really liked.

I’ve felt that BL didn’t take to being told to do the basic drills over and over and over and sort of rebelled.

One of the ‘sifu’ things I tell my students is that we learn and practice the forms to eventually not use them at all. Learning the form to become formless, so to speak.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that JKD concepts are in every good system/style that is taught well by a good teacher. I don’t think BL discovered anything he wouldn’t have found eventually.

Is there a crash course you can take on ‘No Know’ speak? Maybe with with peyote as a required part of it. There are certainly pearls to be found but dang the shell is a tough one to pry open. Just makes them more valuable I suppose.

Reading NK posts is like kung fu. It takes years to understand, longer to master. But he invariably has good contributions to the conversation at hand.

touche’

Good website st00, thanks.

No_Know’s first language? Is it English?

Does American count as English? And in England there are Eastenders (cochney?)and there’s the Nobility (proper)-ish. They all speak English but it might not all sound the same.

There’s Wrong and not correct. Wrong can be Right to a point-ish, but after that, wrong is wrong-ish. English seems to as of this post have design of at least French, German, Greek and the versitile supposed dead language of Latin. Along with the speaker’s understanding, creativity, intention and target audience (listeners)…

Whichever whatever

Hmmm perhaps you think English is not my socalled first language and so you can excuse my speak with that generality.

Hmmm, perhaps English is my so-called first language.?. Then one might wonder, what.

Perhaps a note-ish

First language: babies tend to hear a lot before they speak to adult’s understanding-ish. Television, Radio, neighbours(by the way, the England English spelling of the word (perhaps)), muttering parent(s)…Then being in a location…America…where Every cultural image could be indicative of someone who is an American. Theoretically there are several places that are muli-cultural/linguistic and those might influence/pervert/augment any standard speak for an area.~

We now return you to our irregularly scheduled discussion of, Where’s the Bruce Lee in FMAized JKD.~

No_Know is perhaps my favorite poster.

JKD is just a name. Just like Wing Chun, just like Kempo, Choy Li Fut, Kali, Arnis, Silat, etc… People put in the time at dojos and the like, people drill and touch hands, people interact and have expierences with each other of higher and lesser skill, people have discussions and this randomness on the internet.

My teacher’s method includes elements from FMA because he studied with Dan Inosanto and Rick Faye.

You will also find “kali” JKD peeps and “silat” JKD peeps - not the same. Both ‘branches’ or whatever stem from Guru Dan.

I dont think JKD randoms should “dirty perfectly good FMA with JKD” but I do find very valuable skill-developing drills [training methods] in kali-related and silat-related familys.
