Is Jiu Wan Wing Chun different than Yip Man Wing Chun and what is Jiu Wan Wing Chun like ? Also did K. T. Chao the Author of the books Secret Techniques of Wing Chun study under Jiu Wan K. T. Chao says in his third book Bill Jee that with the death of Yip Man and then with the death of Jiu Wan the Grandmastership of Wing Chun ended because K . T. Chao mentions Jiu Wan i wonder if he was a student of his ?
My first teacher was a student of both Jui Wan and later Moy Yat.
His younger half-brother claims the leadership of Jui Wan WC.
There are some small differences. Then again how many students of Yip Man do everythig the same way. Jui Wan was a student of Yip Man and a close friend as well. Never heard of Chao being a student of Jui Wan.
Hi,
Not really linked but when i was in HK last November for the Ip Man Tong, the bell boy in the Hotel in Mong Kok used to be a senior student of Jiu Wan. Did a some lok sau and he had very good energy.
Just my two pence worth !
Stu
I have seen their slt- its recognizably paralell to the Ip Man wing chun continuum.
Although Jiu Wan started his WC under a non-YM lineage, he later went to learn with YM in Hong Kong. So it wouldn’t be a surprise if there were similarities or variations, just as we see in the various YM lineages.
Personally, I have met with students of Francis Fong and Jason Lau (both students of Jiu Wan); all of their approaches to chi sao seemed more similar in emphasis (relaxation & fluidity) to what I learned than other YM sub-lineages. Their footwork, though, was significantly different, and even the FF and JL students did footwork differently-- maybe because of FF’s tie-ins with Muay Thai and Kali…
hi ! real fast…
jiu wan learned from jiu chao(his uncle i believe)…who was one of chan yiu mens(chan wah shuns son) top deciples. jiu chao learned along side pan nam(pan nam also learned from lai hip chai)----so it is chan wha shun lineage…he than learned under ng chun so…and than yip man…
the way it was back in the day …for example—with ng chun so—lots of wc people went to ng chun so’s school…and chi saoed with him…and that was how they learned from him…it wasnt like…he was teaching them there forms…know what i mean?..working on application and chi sao..
f.f has a more “jkd” feel to his wc—jiu wan is more along the lines of more traditional jiu wan,imo
