Hey,
is anyone doing the Hung Kuen style?
There do not seem to be many of my kind.
HOng Quan (Hung Kuen)
Which Hung Kuen ?
Hung Gar (Lum Sai Weng, Wong Fei Hong), Hebei Hong Quan, GuangXi Hong Quan (Taizu Hong Quan), Hunan Hong Quan, Emei Hong Men Quan, Guangdong Hung Men (around 5 variaties), Guandong Hung Kuen (around 6 varieities at least).
Wong Fei Hong’s Hung Gar is one of the most popular styles in the west, plenty of that styles supporters around!
Cheers,
Wu Chan Long
Hm…
Style originally tought and concepted by the Master Hung Hey Kwun.
Our Si Tai Gung was Yuen Yik Kai
One of his students is now my Sifu
I do Hung Gar (lai Ng Sam lineage)
I´ve heard Hung is kind of similar to Hung Kuen in some parts.
You also have the 5 (main) animals but instead of the stork you have the crane, isn´t it?
Also some of the handforms are quiet different.
Which animal do you prefer?
Which weapon do you prefer?
I’m interested in hearing more about your ‘Hung Kuen’. I know a guy who is a senior practitioner of this system he knows many forms both hand and weapon, but has told me he understands little of lineage and origins of the system. If I understand correctly he trained in a club called ‘Jing Mo’ in Toronto, Canada.
Would your Sifu permit you posting the syllabus for the system ? My friend practices several Lotus style forms as part of his Hung curriculum they are easily recodnizable as southern style forms and have the look of Hung-Gar yet are alien to anything I have learned as a Hung-Gar practitioner.
regards,
UM.
Yuen Yik Kai
Yuen Yik Kai is the person who wrote the five pattern hung kuen books with Leung Ting.
Isn’t this system suppose to come from Mui Hin and Ng Mui? Don’t know much about it but the poses in the book are definitely not from the mainstream wong fei hong variety. Nor is it close to HaSayFu.
I’d be interested to have you share what your line teaches and emphasizes too.
?
Hm.. although my English is not that good (and my Chenese is even worst) I do not really seem to understand.
Eventhough I practise Hung Kuen very intensively I´m not so good in learning everything about the historical background, but if you could post the questions more easyly I will try to ask my Sifu about it and then I will be glad to answer your questions.
I know history is an important part of a system, but I emphasize
more on the practical parts
Hung Kuen and Hung Men
See our latest issue July Aug 2003 for part II of our coverage of the Taiwan Hung Men - Behind the Big Door Part II - Taiwan Secret of Hung Men Salutes, Tribunal Halls and the Rituals of Exotic Lion Dance - this is a different take on the development of the Hung schools from the Taiwan perspective instead of the common Canton one.
Hung Gar
Hello,
Anyone intersted in Hung gar should check out this link to a 1956 Hong kong news story that was recently translated by grandmaster Chiu chi ling and myself. You may also wish to check out the affiliated links listed there.

Rob

Interesting. I read the transcript and noted…
“Chiu kau is now sixty- two years old, waking up at five o’clock a.m. exercising his skillful knowledge of “dit sin kuen” iron wire training.”
Maybe settles the old debate over when Tid Sin should be done, morning or evening ?
UM.
Jessy,
The question is, tell us a little more about your style, system.
What forms does it teach
How does it compare with the Wong Fei Hong Version or any other version.
What are the key elements it emphasizes.
Stuff like that. Anything you care to share.
Ursamajor, is there a debate on the time for Tit Sin? You can’t conclude that because he did it in the morning, he didn’t do it in the evening or it is better. I believe his son Chiu Wai, my si-gung, did it in the mornings and evenings.
More important is hunger and weather. And don’t get me started on direction…
ROB, great that you are sharing this article.

Haha hasayfu is there a debate ? Well there are certainly opinions I seem to catch wind of it from time to time. For the record I practice Tid Sin whenever I can busy life that it is – with a few provisions. My HG sigung used to warn me about practicing prior to daily ablutions which he meant the clearing of the bowels. He also made much about not practicing Tit Sin after sex (tough choice eh ? haha). What do you think about starting a new thread “When to practice Tid Sin ?” Sounds like you have lots to say I’d be very interested to hear what you have discovered about the ‘when’ and ‘why’ of Tid Sin ?
JessyBlue sorry for the hijack. I will see about calling the fellow I mentioned earlier. As I said his school was Jing Mo, Toronto, Canada. I am certain his style is Hung Kuen and that school has been around along time. He has his own Hung Kuen club in a suburb. Sometime ago we discussed forms he says his system has no Tiger & Crane, Ten Forms or Kung Tse. Does your system ?
Regards,
UM.
Hung Kuen
Well, my style (Hung Kuen) is seperated into 5 animal styles, which include the Tiger ( strength), dragon (inner strenth (my style)), snake (chi), leopard (speed & aguility), stork (flexibility).
It is translated as the fist of Hung and is a southern Shaolin style.
It also anhances a lot of traditional weaponstyles.
After my Sifu started Kung Fu, he went to China and met there ( eccidently) Yuen Yik Kai.
He studied there a couple of years until he went back to Germany and opened his private school.
We are trained in a very traditional style there, that´s hard to do but with a little enthusiasm you will stand the first months of basic training. Then the fun begins.
As I told you, I do not know very much about the history or lineage, excapt that our Si Tai Gung is Hung Hey Kwun.
Jessyblue,
