how do i avoid breaking my nose?

i just started doing sanda and ive been sparring…being that im kinda vain, im kinda paranoid about breaking my nose because im scared my nose might look kinda nasty if i do break it, and i cant really afford rhinoplasty. so how often do fighters break their nose? is there anything one can do maybe decrease the chances of breaking your nose? what about permanent damge…how bad does your nose ussually look if u do break it? all comments are appreciated

I used to worry about getting my nose smashed…until I got tagged in the groin.

Now I have my priorities in order.

Don’t worry about breaking your nose…literally, don’t worry. If you’re gonna worry about anything, worry about what it will mean that your nose will NOT be broken, as far as your skill is concerned. After that, learn dodging.

The experience I had was the same as yours. WOrrying that my face will be further retarded with my not-goodl looking one. However, even with dodging skills, the mental obstacle was overwhelming, until it finally gets broken. A bowl of blood flows onto the ring & my gloves, there was no pain then but the nose shifted from the centre to the right side from a straight. Some kind soul then quickly pushes it back into place. X-ray scan reveal a fracture which heal in 3 weeks. Nose was abit swollen then.

Another friend had the same problem but he didn’t bleed like me, his face turn black the next day & he had a surgery to drain the clots.

After that the mental fear of nose breaking disappear, & it helps my dodging skills temendously. Hope this help. Make sure some one standby can help push back immediately if this happens.

Face mask? Buy the SWAT kind that’s bulletproof glass that goes over the whole face. :stuck_out_tongue:

How about breathing?

wow..wwhile i appreciate the replies, i think maybe my anxiety has increased somewhat…a bowl of blood in the middle of the ring sounds not too desirable lol…i guess i was just more worried about walking around with cauliflower nose or uhh just any kinda permanent disfiguration..heheh…o well, its the price we pay to have some fun beating the crap out of eachother

Don’t be such a pussy. Chicks dig scars and stuff. They don’t want someone as pretty as they are. It gives them self-confidence issues.

“Wounds heal, Chicks dig scars, Glory is Forever!”

-besides, I broge by dose,ad ids fide! (say it aloud)

Broken my nose 2X already. Aint no thing but a chicken wing. But then again, I’ve always had a face for radio.

Broken my nose four times. First time was my brother with a fine right hook… that one had to be straightened in hospital (went to 45 degs across my face). After that the next three times were easy. I’m still really really beautiful!

(And that’s even with a scar or two on my face from a kick in the head in rugby, a punch in the face with a ring and a kick in the face from some pikey; plus two slightly chipped and cracked teeth from the very same pikey!) It’s all character!

And seriously, I am really really beautiful!

But, think of it this way: the pikey tried to run me over in his car after he’d given me a good kicking… it’s a tribute to my MA efforts that I still had enough wherewithall to manage to get the hell out of the way. It’s surprising how little you worry about your face being kicked in if it really hits the fan and your life is in danger. Get your priorities right: if ever you really need to use your MA the last thing you should be worried about is a couple of knocks to your pretty face.

Back to the nose thing: it’s much easier after the first couple of times. The last two times I could fight on without thinking. Plus I’ve since taken some knocks that I’m sure would have been strong enough to break it had it not already been broken! Not looking forward to it being broken the other way though…! It’s always been left to right until now!

D@mn, that was long…

did I mention that I am really really beautiful…?!

If you’re that worried, stop going to class.

Otherwise, just hope it gets broke in class where someone will stop, instead of some uncontrolled confrotation where they won’t.

You are more likely to get a broken nose if you are worried about getting a broken nose. That being said, getting it set right away will go along way to keeping it from being noticably crooked. Also, a bloody nose is not nessisarly broken. They also don’t alway gush, but rather can give you hum-dinger black eyes. (both eyes at once.)

I have no idea how namy times I’ve brocken my nose. You can’t tell by looking at it that it has been broken at all. Many years ago, a doc took an x-ray to see why my sinus passage was blocked. He figured (at that time) I had at least 12 breaks. I know I’ve broken it 1 time since. Take what you will from that, but remeber, it’s soft cartalidge so they can’t really tell how many times it has been broke, only that it as X many old fractures which may or may not have come from X many seperate injuries.

(No, I didn’t fight alot as a kid. But I did tend to fall off roofs, swing sets, ect. And I used to repel with a bunch of friends who thought it amusing to try to kill themselves. )

Well, a crooked nose hasn’t hurt Owen Wilson any …
