Had to stop sparring.

I was in my NHB class and we were working on stand up. So were in the ring with the gloves and stuff on. Now my opponent is 55lbs bigger and about 8 months more experienced. The problem is he goes full out. I’m getting knocked down twice a round. In round 2 I eat a monster uppercut to my mouth which puts a cut in the same spot outside my mouth as inside. Further more in round 4 I take a knee to the sternum which makes me want to puke. I had to pull out in round 5. So we just worked grappling.

I have bruises all along the backside of my left knee. A huge lump/bruise on my right knee. A bloody nose, a fat lip and a spliting headache. Did I do the wrong thing?

Your going to get brain damage if you go like that every time. Seriously. You’ll be like that one boxer who literally has become retarted from brain damage.

Brazilian jiujitsu is superior.

Do you think that you’re learning efficient self defence? In my understanding the idea was to learn to defend yourself, not get your st kicked all the time. Sounds like a waste of time to me. Go to the local pub and pick a fight with a biker. They’ll kick your a for free.

Naw, yu doing fyne. I par 3 weeks pa time and I haven’t had any (uh wait a second, dam owls in the coatrack again). Like I was saying, four score and seven years ago our fore-fadders brought, naw that wasn’t it, uhhh, uhhh oh yeah, i not have feel any ill affects from it at all.

youd better regulate that kind of training, hard training is good on occaision, but you will burn out if you do it too often.

That ain’t “sparring” that’s called beating on each other.

Going hard is one thing.

Being used as a human punching bag is another. This guy is a dick.

I don’t like to get hit, I don’t think you’re doing Taiji right if you get hit…

Dude, that’s pretty . Sparring hard is essential, but you should never go all out with someone more skilled and with that big of a weight and strength advantage. He should’ve been exercising more control. That’s how you get injured and end having to pull out of a fight. Trust me, I’ve been there and it ain’t worth it :frowning:

“The UFC spawned a new breed of “mixed martial artists.” World-class wrestlers learned to kickbox. Champion kickboxers learned to grapple. (The karate experts learned to stay home.)”

You should not be taking many head shots period

Unless you want to get puch drunk, a very real medical condition that boxers and soccer players get, you better quit getting hit in the head. Seriously.

Jerry Quarry, at the age of 44 could not comb his hair or brush his teeth. He died shortly thereafter. He was a boxing contender and fought Frazier, Ali, and other top fighters in the 70’s.

You guys should all watch Champions Forever. You will notice that every single ex-champ can barely put a sentence together. Foreman is the only one that can still talk clearly, and he fought far far less rounds than the others. He did not take many shots compared to the others. Joe Frazier can’t even remember what his strategy was during the Thrilla in Manilla! I have that on another tape. Holmes and Norton sound like they have peanut butter in thier mouths. Watch thier eyes.
Ali…well you know how he sounds. Riddick Bowe can barely put a sentence together today, and he is still in his 30’s!!! He sounds half alsleep.

This is serious stuff. You are f#cking up your future. I believe in taking shots to the head and face, but not making that part of a regular training regimen.

The thing is its not regular, I was wondering if it was a good idea to pull out or not. I see at least in my opinion it was a good idea. My instructor also asked me a couple of times during the fight if I wanted to quit. I said no due to “bravery”. He also took the guy aside and said to take it easy. He would take it easy until I got a shot in. Then he’d go psycho, all the other guys I spar with at least take it a little bit easier if i’m not there size. If its any consolation during grappling I armbared and triangled his ass.

Where do I sign up?

Seriously though sounds like your going a little hard. MA is ment to be a life time art. At this rate you’ll be crippled by the time your 30.

Take it easy.

Dude what an asehole. Does he think you’ll get any better by getting your ass kicked? sounds like your teacher has a thing to learn, too.

Sparring isn’t about who can kick who’s ass, it’s about improving your technique on both sides.

Iron

you did the right thing.

  1. sparring full contact IMO is a necessity, but you should also know to take it easy on someone with much less experience than you. If we do something like that in class, we’ll get punished for it.

  2. Sounds like you got cut/bruised up pretty bad. you don’t want anything permanent. I wouldn’t reccomend doing this on a regular basis.

3.this was training - not a real fight, and not in the ring. There was no need to be “brave” and duke it out. If someone has a choke locked in on you, do you tap, or do you pass out because you are trying to be “brave”? there’s a thin line between bravery and stupidity…

I’d advise against sparring like that, in about 5 years your retina’s gonna get all screwed up and no more boxing, ever. I’ve seen it happen with my seniors.

Most actions of men can be explained by observing a pack of dogs. Not wild dogs, just neighborhood dogs who all scurry under the fence on the same night and set off together to reclaim a glimmer of the glory their species possessed before domestication.

Support The Economy. Buy A Gun.

As long as it’s only every once in a while, I highly support this type of training. Twice a month is the most that I would consider safe. And that’s not 2 five hour sparring sessions a month. That’s 2 times of going maybe 5 or six rounds per month. That’s allot of abuse to your body as it is.

Second, sounds like you got a real b@st@rd on your hands, but they are the best one’s to test you. They test your skill, your conditioning, your “heart” and most of all, your patience.

Third, you said you were putting on gloves, but I didn’t hear the magic words, “mouth piece” and the other majic words, “head gear”. Wanna throw real punches at each other? Make sure you have both of these on. When I go real full contact, I’m wearing Olympic boxing headgear. The foam dipped crap is for moderate contact at most, and that’s only if you are wearing good gloves.

Finally, if they step it up, you had d@mn well better. If you pulled the triangle on the guy, then I’m sure you did all right. But don’t let people, especially beginners, walk on you. It sets a very bad precident.

Sound like you did fine. Take a little more time than you think is neccesary before you spar like that again as the sternum takes quite a while to heal and feels fine long before it is.

If you pr!ck us, do we not bleed? If you poison us, do we not die? And if you wrong us, shall we not revenge? If we are like you in the rest, we will resemble you in that the villany you teach me, I will execute, and it shall go hard but I will better the instruction. MOV

GI,
Sparring is 2 people PRACTICING to hone their skills. The fact that you all only do this seldomly makes me support this kind of training.
We must know how to get our a$$ kicked as well, we need to know how to take a shot correctly. Just as JWT said this is a good test for your heart and mindset.

If your gettin beatin down somewhere and you go nuts-this is not that smart, you always want to hone your mindset during the fight-FOCUS.

Also, there is a between bravery and courage. Courage originates from the wisdom of mind . It is different than bravery. It means you have an understanding of the situation.

All in all though, sounds like you belong to a good school.
