Different types?

Hi

I know very little about “Wing Chun”. I was just wondering which lineages of “Wing Chun” there is in the world? Is itonly Wing Chun, Wing Tsun and Ving Tsun?

Hope someone can help.

The major branches represented in China include Chan Wah-Shun/Yip Man, Yuen Kay-San/Sum Nung, Yuen Chai-Wan/Yiu Choi, Pao Fa Lien, Gulao/Pien San, Cho Ga, Pan Nam, Chan Yiu-Min, Mai Gei Wong, and the Jee Shim lineages.

But what are the branches used in Europa and US. Are they Wing Tsun, Ving Tsun and Wing Chun? Or have I misunderstood something (It’s all pretty new to me) If not where does Wing Tsun, Ving Tsun and Wing Chun fit into it all, if they aren’t lineages?

wing/ving chun/tsun

Those are typically just differences in spelling which different branches of the Yip Man system use. There’s no universally accepted, set way to write Cantonese in Roman characters (romanization) so you can “spell” the same Chinese word in different ways (Wing, Whing, Ving, Weng, Chun, Tsun, Cheun, Choon, etc.) Wing Chun is probably the most generic used. Since Hong Kong was a British colony at the time, and WC was typically used to signify “Water Closet” (toilet), it’s said many there went with Ving Tsun instead (you can find this one used by the VTAA, Wong Shun-Leung, Moy Yat, and others). Leung Ting, by contrast, wanted a unique spelling he could trademark for his own schools, so went with WingTsun ™. In recent years, even more have come up like Ving Chun, Wing Tchun, etc.

Rene, I’m impressed with your knowledge…

You know about the water closet reason for the Ving Tsun spelling…

Rene is not really human. IBM actually transferred Big Blue into his body.

Actually, I think Rene was sent back from the future to kill Sarah Connor

hmmm

How’s he in chess <g>

EC- Hey, if only there’d be WCK catagory on Jeopardy! LOL! Actually, I’ve heard several old stories about the name Ving Tsun. I’ve heard the characters pronounced in Toishanwa and it didn’t sound too far from that 8)

Dzu- I’ll be back (to salute you!)

David - I used to play when I was in grade school but haven’t in many years. I’ve tried Chinese chess a couple of times but the cannons always scare my elephants and they fall into the river 8(

You’re Big Blue, you don’t need to practice!

Well, what I’m more curious about is why Grandmaster Fung Chun’s stance is significantly narrower than Robert Chu’s.

WH

Even with the same structural principles might not the outward apperence differ?

again, i’ve never seen either’s stance.

dont forget a big person is not a scaled 1:1 little person. Guy A has nong legs, guy
B has a long torso. Even if they are the same height, there stances may apper diffent, even if the intent is the same.

WH

Does your horse match that of Lun Gai or Leung Sheung?

Rgds,

?

anotomical difference?
different use of stance?

I know little of the schools in question, but should they look alike for some reason?

WH - Should the student look like the master?

Are they master-student?

Or just associated by lineage?

To answer your question, OdderMensch…

Don’t you think the structural principles should be the same?
