A friend of my is looking for Sothern style school in San Francisco. Can someone recommend a good CLF school in San Francisco? Seems Doc Fai Wong and Tat Mau Wong both have very strong schools, how are they different in terms of emphesis on sparring, forms, realistic self defense…etc?
thanks
Tat mau wong has a record as a winning fighter and doc fai wong has been around for a long time teachig CLF. Having said that both schools are probibily good. Your friend should go to those schools and see what fits him. If your friend is looking for choy lay fut their are plenty of schools in san fran.
In Tat Mau Wong’s school, you can train full contact San Shou fighting, especially at their Kickboxing academy on 601 Clement St. I’d recommend stopping by and talking to the instructors there. They’re all really friendly.
The forms are shorter and fewer in number compared to DFW school. Not saying that it is better, but just different.
There is a big emphasis on sparring and combat at TMW school, and it makes sense, b/c Tat Mau Wong is really well known for his full contact fighting skills (5 time full contact fight champ in SE Asia).
But it is well rounded. The forms training is intense as well.
Ultimately, both masters’ schools will give you good forms, physical conditioning, and combat. The atmosphere and methodology are different, and what you connect with is really a matter of your personal preference.
I don’t know if that was helpful at all.
