was planning to check it out within a week, but was wondering if anyone could relate any details about their experiences there, especially on the system of instruction (because there are different mantis styles taught evidently). appreciate it
Well, it’s a Korean-lineage school, which means his Mantis more than likely comes through Lin Pan Zhang or Jiang Kyung Fung. No too shabby. ![]()
And I’m betting dimes to dollars that his longfist forms are similar, if not identical, to mine.
The sifu is Grandmaster Keychun Song from Sol, Korea. I know him as Sajo. My sifu is one of his first generation students from the eighties. They primarily teach Seven Star Praying Mantis and Shaolin Northern Longfist. PM me for more info please.
Wow, good timing guys.
I’m moving to Chi-town sometime next month, and was going to post a question about the state of PM out there, but I don’t need to now.
Thanks!

Mantis in Chicago
There are a couple of mantis schools in the Chicago area - I’ll leave it up to you to visit the different websites/schools and make up your own mind. There may be more, but these are the schools of which I am aware:
http://www.sevenstarmantis.com/ - seven star
http://www.mantisfist.com/main.html - seven star
http://www.songskungfu.com/ - as mentioned previously
http://www.geocities.com/HotSprings/Falls/4180/frames.htm - in Peoria
There are ssome southern mantis too, but I didn’t include those.
Any first-hand knowledge?
I’m also interested in Chicago are Mantis schools. Does anybody have any knowledge of, or experience with, any of the schools listed above? As everybody knows, there are vast degrees of difference in the quality of sifus. And having never studied Mantis, just showing up and observing, well I don’t have much to go on.
Tx!

I’ll vouch for him also! He is a kung fu brother to my sifu, Jeff Organ through John Tsai (Shaolin Chuan Fa). We both did bung bo at the 2005 Chinatown festival. He did the 7star version and my partner and I did the TCPM version.
I highly recommend the Kung Fu Academy of Chicago on 6751 North Sheridan. I studied Northern Shaolin Kung Fu and sparring with them from time to time in order to assist with my Vovinam Viet Vo Dao training. They have an extremely well rounded program, and good Sifus. Their tough though, and if your not serious you won’t last. Sifu Kwan in the main Sifu and has trained many of the Northern Shaolin school owners in Chicago over the years. He’s a really nice guy, and very good at what he does. Check it out and let me know what you think:D .
Awesome thanks for the replies guys i will be checking them out some time this week.
