Aikido film - Hiroshi Isoyama, 8th Dan, Aikikai

A demostration video. Not a fight video ;).

Enjoy!

A lot better…

This one’s a lot better than most Aikido Demos. The attacker is actually striking versus just sticking his arm out. The demonstrater looks like a bad@ss with the way he’s just stalking the other guy!

that was a cool.

They didn’t do my favorite move though, the one where the attacker comes running up from 10 feet away and grabs the defenders wrist. haha.

That was awsome!

Very good

pretty cool but I am seeing the same problem I have always seen with aikido. Nobody attacks like that!! Rush in and one strike with downward hammer fist and other hand not in a decent defensive posture. And thast’s the attack I’ve seen practiced most often. True have not done any serious study but I have worked out with a number of aikidoka and studied for a few months til I came up with the same conundrum. Nobody attacks like that!!

I would love to see a demonstration of aikido against different systems attacks. Not style vs. style fighting but just against people who actually know how to attack. Watching students of a primarily defensive art attack their sensei always makes me chuckle. I’ve worked with aikidoka and the good ones do make their stuff work against basic jabs, crosses and hooks but every time I see a demonstration it just looks so hokey and staged.

In all fairness, that video was better than most and he was pretty impressive.

The attack he is using is called yokomenuchi…a diagonal strike cutting at the temple to the far side of the jaw.

This is an abstraction of an common method of attack, usually involving a blunt instrument such as a club, bottle, or chair (or a sword back in the old days).

Aikido´s defenses are great.
When it comes to weapons,it often does not even matter what your opponent is holding (may it be a knife, bottle, stick…) or a plain fist/swordhand.
When you learn how to blend with energies,it does not matter what your opponent does, you just go with the flow.

wow, i love kung fu movies. Have you guys seen Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon or Rush Hour 2? …those have some realistic fighting too

Wow, what took you so long tw?

Has anyone seen a fight with an aikido practitioner? I mean these demos are cool and all but…

any real video available…? Don’t aikido guys spar to learn timing etc? any video of that?

These area couple of pretty good vid clips as well that I liked:

Unfortunately, some of the best clips are locked to non-members (sorry, I can’t give out my password :frowning: ).

Cant watch in that weird format… :frowning:

How do u become a member? Does it cost money? Is that the case I wont bother

Thanks all, lol.

Yes I understand that attack. But why execute it without sticks at least? It’s not a realistic openhand attack. Period. And the weapon adds more complications not fewer so why practice without some simulator of the weapon if you are practicing armed vs. unarmed defenses. I’ve seen aikido students who have never been taught to attack with a stick/knife/sword other that 1min lecture prior to learning defense.

Guess it’s just my take on the arts. Learn to adapt what you know about weapons defenses and alter them to fit unarmed attacks. Don’t alter the unarmed attack to fit the weapons defense. That’s just silly.

Plus personally I am training for worst case scenarios. That means defenses against trained attackers. I don’t practice BJJ escapes against people who don’t know the positions. I don’t practice hubud against people who can’t perform decent stick attacks. It’s a waste of time. And aikido students need to learn to attack.

Yes, that’s a sweeping generalization. And yes I am making it from my limited experience. I like aikido and I think there are a lot of really sound principles in it. I just never found a school that trained with anything close to realism. And personally I need that in a martial art.

I didnt like that patricia hendricks vid one bit. I didnt like how it was done with music (i know it was a demo and all but it really took the feel away from the art). Also i know aikido is using your opponents force against them, but a lot of that vid was just for show, ie theres a bit at the two minute mark where the attacker dives the wrong way!

Does this mean that you have trained at an Aikido Dojo? Have you tried to “attack” a BB Aikidoka? If so I’m curious of the results? How far did you get tossed? How hard did he/she apply a lock?  (end of sarcassim)
You only really need to answer the first 3 questions!

how does pure akido deal with combos?

i have only been to one akido class, and i would not be harsh enough to judge the art on it. they had no idea what the hell they were doing, so im just curious.

from what i have seen, akido seems awesome as an addon but doesn’t seem to be enough on its own. kinda like bjj.
