9 province eyebrow is a nice set.
wind demon is cool.
what is very useful though is drilling the jebas out of the distancing and whip striking techniques.
the control sets are good in the beginning, but developing the power to put through the staff is different.

Honestly, I didn’t think the Shaolin video was very good. Struck me as a rather average (and light on content) contemporary wushu staff form (I trained “wushu” staff as my only weapon for 4 years).

So it’s kinda hard for me to judge your level. The fact that you’re looking at the Hung Gar monkey staff though gives me some indication. You haven’t said if you want single or double ended especially though. In terms of pure single ended staff technique, the Chau Sot Gwun here

I ordered the staff from martialartsmart.net as well – never did commit to learning the whole form but it gave me some new patterns to work out and I was satisfied with it… probably something I will go back to at some point. I also have the broadsword, spear, and 3 sectional staff DVD’s from there – all of them are quality in my opinion – I’m currently working on my spear and 3 sectional staff (and throwing in a lil chain whip too). I just got the video and at first glance, this set is very very close to the staff set that I currently have. It may just be a different version of the same set. My old sifu is known for adding his own touches to forms so for all I know it may be the exact same form with out his additions.
The name of this new set is “9 continents”.
It’s broken down into 6 sections. They review each section multiple times and then break it down into each individual movement. They then demonstrate one possible application for each technique. (Something that we NEVER did at my old school).
It’a great video. I’d like to thank bodhitree for recommending it.
An additional surprising benenfit of this video was, I discovered that I’ve been some of the techniques in my current staff form incorrectly. The way these same techniques are done in the video make much more sense to me.
I digitized the video and made little quicktime movies of each section. I can now put these movies on my laptop and take the laptop with me to the park or my back yard and work on the form with the reference material right at hand.
I’ll post a video of me doing the form in a few weeks.
Not too shabby at all, Chief Fox. I personally believe it’s possible to get a lot out of videos of good instructors. I assume that the video makers believe it’s possible too.

You’ll find that while you can do many things with a staff, there really are a finite number of things that are found in the many iterations of set play.
sequencing will differ more so than actual techniques.
Watch out for spear sets disguised as staff sets!

that’s a clip of a kid doing it. obviously he’s still working on it as you can tell by some of the longer poses. he also is using a much more flimsy staff despite this being a traditional songshan shaolin form. my friend had learned this form from my old teacher about 2 years ago. you realized the name befitted the form when you heard him swinging the staff around 360. if you are interested in getting it but cannot afford the video sold by martialartsmart, then i have to suggest you get de yang’s dvd (sorry gene!)
