GM Chin’s story was a big, complicated one. It was tricky to resolve it into one cohesive article. Of the material he sent me and all the interviews I did (plus hanging with him for a beer or twenty) there was a lot of stuff I wound up cutting. That’ll be for some other article perhaps, written by someone else. Anyway, I’m looking forward to seeing David and Chris at Taiji Legacy this weekend. We are all giving workshops there.
While Sifu WJM has retired, one would hope that his “fight” with Bruce Lee was not the capstone of his martial skills or experience. Both were young at the time. I’m sure he went on with his 45 years of teaching to produce a full legacy. It must be annoying to have to still respond to something that occurred so very long and so very early in his life.
If he lost to Bruce Lee, was anything he did afterwards not of value?
If he won over Bruce Lee, was that the high point of his career?
Neither outcome should be the judgement of the man. And I say this as a Wing Chun guy.
From what I know is once the fight was over the loser was supposed to close down his school. However, Wong Jack Man only recently retired from teaching leaving one of his long time students in charge of his school.
So, to answer one of your questions, WJM continued to teach and does have a legacy to leave behind. However, in Texas I plan to pick David Chin’s brain because according to him one of my sigung’s was part of that whole fiasco.
