Wing Tsun and JKD (no this is not a style vs style post)

Hello,

I’m always looking for a cool MA to do beside my WT, cause I only train once a week, and it wouldn’t hurt me to check out a different style. I’m particulary interested by JKD, I am wondering, what are the things Bruce Lee added to WingChun/WT when he made his own style ? Is it more ‘movie/show oriented’ or even more oriented to real life situations ? WT is atm the very best of all MA that I’ve tried, looks like I’m sticking to it too, cause everything you learn no mather how silly it looks has veyr nice results in real life fights, cause next to having fun, getting good in defending myself in real life is what I’m going for

Please, give me all the details you can think off

well it is now!!

JKD SUCKS!!!

Hello TzuChan,

JKD is a totally awesome art! For the life of me I don’t know why morons like TjD participate in forums for arts that they don’t like. Anyway JKD has a more open stance than WC. While my WC knowledge is admittedly limited I strongly believe that JKD is more “mobile” than WC. That doesn’t mean that WC practictioners can’t move, but I think JKD has a better “outside” game. JKD also has more variety of kicks than what I’ve seen in WC. JKD gets its “inside” game from WC, so the two arts can compliment each other nicely.

Regards,

John M. Drake

hehe i was totally joking

i’ve had the good fortune to have cross hands in chi sau and a few other drills with long time JKDers who have come to our school to crosstrain or learn some wing chun to learn more about what JKD is about

i’ve got nothing but respect for these guys, while i find most are lacking in the chi sau area (thats cuz they’re new to WC); their other skills definately make up for it when it comes to sparring!

while the JKD way is definately not for me, i have nothin but respect for 'em; and always enjoy an opportunity to cross hands

peace
travis

Then what is so different to JKD and WC ? Basically what is bothering me with WT, is the footwork, so friggin mobile you know ? I mean when fighting people that move around alot (in sparring vs mixed styles) I find it harder to fight then to a person who stands like me in WT .. Could you tell me what Bruce Lee added more or less and changed, how the stances work, what’s their main principles ? Is it still with the center line and chain punches, chi sau etc.. ?

I don´t practice Wc or JKD,I now base my knowledge in this post on what I´ve collected.
It seems some people believe present/modern WC is kind of a torn version of what it used to be (some principles being lost etc.) Also said that what Yip Man taught to Bruce was not what WC originally was about, like he was holding something back.
Then more like to my own understanding-
Wing Chun sure had a major influence on JKD,but Bruce also took something from here and there from different kung-fu styles, probably western boxing and some grappling.
It seemed to my eye, that he wanted to create a style that people could base their own styles on.Wanting to create something modern, forgetting about some traditional ways that he thought were useles, including forms.
I believe he wanted it to be street effective,no wonder JKD players were street clothes while practicing.
He had many interesting ideas and sayings.it was his belief that technique must be simple and direct,to work best-no wasted movement.

" Well sounds like u have descent standup so why not make u’re self the complete fighter by adding 6 months of BJJ( groundfighting )???"

I’m particulary interested by JKD, I am wondering, what are the things Bruce Lee added to WingChun/WT when he made his own style ?
" Man this is a tough answer! There is a reason behind Bruce’s JKD…no. 1…he added fencing footwork to get in faster! If u watch fencers they feint feint and lunge. NOW WHY WOULD HE WANT TO LUNGE??? Well for one…he was real fast so he can get in and tag u before u can get your guard up! Plus…he had KO power for a little guy…I’m talking about one punch KO power! A good fighter to watch who I think fights similar to BRUCE is Naseem Hamed. The rest was some elements of boxing and wing chun trapping up close! But yes his foot work was design to LUNGE in and out! That’s why u don’t really see a lot of SIDESTEPPING."

Is it more ‘movie/show oriented’ or even more oriented to real life situations ?
" Well in the movies the high kicking and weapon usuage was for the movies!"

WT is atm the very best of all MA that I’ve tried, looks like I’m sticking to it too, cause everything you learn no mather how silly it looks has veyr nice results in real life fights, cause next to having fun, getting good in defending myself in real life is what I’m going for
" My only suggestion is to go out and spar with other standup fighters…and GOOD ONEs…not beginner students…see if u can use your tactics against them…eventually u’ll adapt! So go find some good boxers, kick boxers, muy thai guys, tkd, karate and other cma guys. I find that alot of CMA skools only are interested with training with their own clan or clique. Only when they do open tourneys do they have the oppts to spar against others. Whass the point of sparring classmates that u know u can beat??? LOL!"

Then what is so different to JKD and WC ?
“Foot work!”

“YES but in real fighting…u’re not really going to be up against someone dancing around side to side! U’re basically 2 emotional car wrecks and whoever gets the solid hit or hits will win! Think about it…it’s rare where u see 2 fights be a thing of beauty as TYSON vs. LEWIS. It’s more lacklikely the bedlam or close quarter combat of COPs TV SHOW!”

Is it still with the center line and chain punches, chi sau etc.. ?
“Center line YES! Chain punches uhhhhhhhhhh yes and no! He modified this to make it more powerful by adding boxing principals. Chi sau YES.”
