I am interested in learning Wing Chun and I’m looking for a good school. I live in Brooklyn in the Bensonhurst area but I am willing to travel to Manhattan if necessary. I’ve done some research and found some schools.
have you visited any of them? I would do that first… I know that Duncan has a student in the Bronx. When I go back to NY i was going to call him. He teaches Kali/Applied WC.
What are you looking for in a Martial art? DO NOT SAY : practical, traditional yet street effective. Thats doesn’t really mean anything..
Are you looking for something more mental then physical? Are you looking to get into shape? Are you looking to do sparring? just forms? Why are you only looking for Wing Chun? NY has more Martial Art schools than just about any other city..
be realistic in your goals. In the list you gave NYC Wing Chun is the only school I would recommend visiting. If you are up to the training schedule and you are ok with the teaching style then I would recommend them or the Kali/WC school. I know of also some good MMA, Thai , Sanda schools.
monji-are you referring to Sifu Joe Moosey (sp?) He is an exceptional WC man. Soft-spoken, polite, generous, very knowledgeable, and a nightmare to touch hands with! He is fast, powerful, and explosive, and at the same time has extreme control.
Thanks, Derek (VingDragon). I live in the Bensonhurst area myself - and my school is located ten minutes away in the Midwood area. Contact me here and we’ll talk if you like: wingchun@usa.com
While I think that there are all levels of practitioners, and I’m not familiar with just what you hope to get out of it. If my assumption that you want to learn how to fight well, sooner than later, I would suggest Victor Parlati’s school of Traditional Wing Chun. Not only is he very well experienced but he is sort of at the “nucleus” , with the school of New Jersey being close. Victor is cutting edge, in my opinion.

Sorry to intrude. I was wondering, if anyone knew of a Yuen Kay Shan WCK practitioner, that is from Sum Nung Sigungs early student and Uncle Sum Jee. Another YKS WCKer mentioned tht the Sum Jee disciple had just moved to NYC, about 3 months ago. But I cant track them down.
Note this isnt related to NYC Omni Wing Tzun from Teddy Wong and his daughter Vivian. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for all the suggestions. I will be visiting Wing Chun NYC today, and some other schools during the week.
You should also look into Gardos Wing Chung. The teacher is really good (I checked out a class). I remember is was a really good workout. He also has a cable show, just in case you want to watch.
Has anyone tried Fut Sao Wing Chun Kuen? I was thinking of it since I am in brooklyn kind of close to there. Web Site looks like it has a interesting curriculum.
