What do you to enhance the power of your strikes?

I’m really curious to know what you guys do to strengthen your punching and kicking strikes. I do pushups but with my fist to strengthen my knuckles. I also hit my shin with a steel bar to strengthen my kicks. What are your suggestions?

Why the hell would you kick a steel bar? That wont help your kicks. I doubt that will help condition your shin since a full force kick to a steel rod would either brake your shin or hurt you real bad.

Just practice kicking heavy bag and punching that should be all you need. If you want more practice punching and kicks in a swimming pool for resistence.

You couldn’t do what I do necessarilly (you have’t had the same development).

But I barely breathe to increase the power about which you asked.~

what do i doo???

to ehnace the power of MY strikes i use a roll of quarters:D

600 pound heavy bag baby!!!

Well, OK, I only have 400 pounds of metal sawdust from work so far, BUT I can fit all 600 and will probually have it by the end of next season.

Try to understand where the power comes from. There are a couple theories one is that it comes through the body like a whipping chain into the hands. For me its a push off the ground from the heel, through the legs to the hips through a rotation of the body, shoulder, elbow into the fist.

Bag work will help alot.

Exactly what DK said, and whip the waist and tighten the lat upon impact.

I still think the roll of quarters is a good idea.

Can’t hurt…well it can for the reciever.

I’ve seen these large rubber bands that wrestler’s use for shooting that is hooked on a harness that connects to your wrist and ankles.

They use them for shooting drills but if you would throw punches and kicks with them they would build striking muscles and help with using your hips correctly.

Frank Shamrock uses them for training his fighters. It hooks up for punches and kicks.

Could someone post a link to a picture and/or place to purchse these “rubber shooter bands?”

Rev. Tim

I use my bowflex for that stuff. It gives nice free-form cable reiatance.

I don’t care what shamrock does. If i ever see that punk i’ll just crack him over the head with my foreman grill and show him who the real info-mercial king is!

But seriously, I’d heard Ken Shamrock was a “Juice guy”. I read
an article in SI about these wrestlers dropping dead in their late
30’s. It was a pretty interesting yet non-specific nor scientific testimonial.

PCP - you guys messing around with traditional training methods are just wasting your time. Welcome to the 21st century!

Some points which I consider important (I´m no expert,but I know something…what was my name again?. )
Random ideas for striking:
1.Using the structure:strike can be,but is not neseccarily only an extended arm and hand.Adding body mass will help.
It is often said that hips should be where strike comes from.
Adding hip rotation to a strike does wonders.
2.Condition(ing) Strength of tissue:External power is not the main thing, but one of them.If technique is based on strength,it will probably fail, but with no force,we could not walk.
Heavy bag work and other conditioning exercises are good for building up stronger muscle, hardening bone…etc.
3.Technique:Knowing how to attack,what to attack with…etc.

Those are SOME of the things I was thinking of,I´m afraid to write sort of a bible on this,as methods vary, and I´m not skilled enough.
Classic lines:Hoping that helps a bit.

like people have said, i try and work on that waist rotation… its pretty easy to put your hip into a strike, but to really work on a hard contraction of those muscles ( i think its obliques?) is a lot harder, at least for me. plus, work on making them stronger - theres a few good ab exercises for twisting muscles.

"You couldn’t do what I do necessarilly (you have’t had the same development). "

Show off.

I try and relax and focus my intent.

heya

does relaxing still involve a sharp contraction of obliques? or maybe a contraction over a longer period of time? just throwing ideas up here.

 i like debating about stuff like this. **** i wish i had someone my age to train with… my brothers 12, when i make him spar he concentrates more on crying that punching? weirdo.
