Hi, I wonder if anyone can help.
Every now and again, I get a weird feeling in my chest bone, central, kind of just above my sternum (I think) where it feels like a bone is under pressure where it shouldn’t be. If I arch my back and push my chest out then the centre of my chest (where it feels as if something is poking either in or out) ‘pops’, and then my chest feels as if it back to normal.
Anyone else? Please?
It sometimes happens if I’ve been sitting hunched over or if my girlfriends been lying on my chest, or after long periods of sitting the same way or being inactive. So to sum up, my chest feels weird, so if I spread it it pops and feels normal again.

There are many, many joints / points of movement located at the thoracic cage (i.e., sternal costal joints, manubrial sternal joint, etc.) and back at that level that it’s very difficult to diagnose what’s wrong without a physical exam.
definitely go see a doctor, especially if the problem has persisted.
It might be nothing, especially if there’s no pain associated with it, but still, check it out with a doc.
I think this is pretty normal, it’s like having vertebrae out of alignment. If I have been sitting for a long time, or just woke up, I need to twist my torso to pop my vertebrae and fling my arms and head back to pop my chest. I’ve seen chiropractors, a rolfer, Swedish Massage, a good acupunturist, all of these helped, but the fact is my structure is a little off kilter due to injuries and defects. If you experience moderate to severe pain due to this, you should see a professional, but if the pain is light to none, I wouldn’t worry too much about it.
I recommend studying Yoga, which should crack you up pretty good and increase your body awareness.

Wow dude I get this funky pressure in my chest some times during pushups or after heavy benching. Mine never pops though, in fact, I think popping would make it feel better.
Actually I forgot about mine and it went away. Thanks for reminding me

My chest does the same exact thing, Scotty. I was elbowed in the ribs(Bruised ribs suck!) by a big skinhead about 5 years ago, and it has popped ever since; not every day, but most days. It doesn’t appear to be a serious issue for me, no pain, it’s the same feeling as when I pop my back. Who knows, maybe a doc will be able to tell you what it is. It doesn’t bother me in any way, but I have always been a little bit curious since no one else I know does it.

Yeah my chest – the cartilage in my sternum pops if I want it to … which I choose not to I know others who can pop it at will as well. Everynow and then, I just take a deep breath and my back and chest pops and cracks.
Well. for all you guys with a weird popping chest I’m got a doctor’s appointment tonight to find out what the hell it is.
My g/f had a similar problem last year, she went to see the doctor who told her to stop training for a bit, as she’d pulled something and the constant twisting was making it worse. I think mine might have been something I did last year, and my increased pushup program has made it worse over the last week or so.
So I’ll let you know what the Doc says…
And she said something to do with laxing ligaments and cartilage. And she thought it was very likely that I’d aggravated a long dormant injury by starting an intensive pushup program.
To be honest, I fairly didn’t understand what she said, but shes told me to take anti inflammatorys for 5 days, and take it easy. So, that’s what I’ll do. Thanks everyone.

My recommendation would be to take it easy for more than 5 days. Don’t do the push up routine. Yes, this means you’ll be flabbing out on your upper body a little bit – do some aerobic and non-weight bearing exercises to maintain your muscle tone. Like practicing forms, punching air, gentle shoulder exercises, etc.. nothing that bears weight. you’ll have to see for yourself.
Joint ligaments are basically supportive cables in the body that prevent certain ranges of motion in order to prevent damage to the muscles and tendons attached to the bones. Other ligaments in the body are merely for supportive reasons like holding up part of your intestines or heart or what not. Basically, if you strain or rip a ligament, it increases your chance that the injury will repeat cause usually it doesn’t heal to 100% of what it was before. Hence rehab.
I aggravated a ligament in my shoulder in September and I’m still taking it easy now. Ligaments and tendons (with exceptions) generally have a harder time healing than other tissues in the body because they don’t receive an active blood or nerve supply. They get whatever nutrients and healing factors from interstitial fluids. So even if the problem subsides after like a week or so, I would still go easy for at least a month afterwards, slowly testing myself and seeing what hurts and what doesn’t.
