Tournament training?

Hi all…just opening this new thread because I’m deciding whether I should or shouldn’t…I just started training again in MA about two-three months ago and joined a school last night after a 3-year hiatus and the teacher had said that I have a strong background and that I could still compete in tournaments if I so wished.

Just out of curiosity, for MAs that regularly compete in tournaments, what is your training like and how often do you do this kind of training to prepare for tournaments? Also, what do and don’t you eat? Would it make a difference if you weren’t training for a tournament (i.e. would you take better care of yourself?)? Do you cut down your weight to make the weight class you want? Lastly, do you take any kind of dietary supplements? If so, which ones, why?

Thanks, all!

My training is the same whether it’s tourney time or not. 2-3 hours per day, which covers calisthenics, forms, weight training, stancework and cardio work.

The difference however, would be focus. around toureny time, you may want to spend more time sparring and doing drills, working timing and such. If you are a forms competitor, then focus on your forms moreso than sparring and drilling.

I read your profile and noticed you do TKD and some other stuff. Is this a TKD tourney you’re talking about?

Hi SevenStar,

Thanks for the reply. I guess sifu was talking about TKD tournaments since he used to be involved in it twenty years ago. But I am curious about all kinds of tournament training in general.

I just updated my profile; you reminded me about it when you mentioned that you looked at it. I just quit the Hung Gar school I was in for certain reasons. The school I joined now is a Ba Gua school but the sifu had previous experience in TKD, Judo and Wushu, so he knows the works.

Again, I’m still not sure about competing but would like to know how others deal with it. Thanks, SevenStar.
