Are there any Wing Chun schools in the suburbs of Chicago? When I go home from college for Christmas break I’d like to find a school to study at, even if it’s only temporary.
Thanks,
Iron
PS. It goes without saying that only good schools should be named. I don’t know anything about WC politics, but I don’t want any Ashida Kim type schools listed hehehehe

You might like to check out Scott Baker. He’s the author of a book titled “Chi Kung, Development and Practical Application in Wing Chun Kung-Fu”
His website says:
“Authentic Wing Chun Kung Fu is overseen by Sifu Scott Baker. He believes in the tradition of keeping a small class of dedicated students. He is teaching a few dedicated students private lessons in the Chicago area. Scott was trained by Master Tam Hung Fun and SiFu Peter Yu in New Zealand. Having received a Ph.D. in Social Psychology he continues to teach Wing Chun to a small group of dedicated students. His focus in teaching is upon the development of internal skills. He maintains that all of Traditional Wing Chun was centered around the development of deep Chi kung skills and the utilization of them in real combat. He invites any interested parties to a free private introduction, to evaluate the class and to decide if this Wing Chun is right for them.”
I dont know what kind of wing chun you do. But you might want to contact windy city wing chun
in Chicago. I dont have their web page info handy but you should be able to get it via your search engine.
I don’t do any Wing Chun. I want to start. But, to actually go to Chicago may be a bit of a hassle for me this Christmas, which is why I would prefer the suburbs.
Thanks for the replies so far.

Havent been there in a few years but still have some good friends In WC there.Scott baker is near bolingbrook.up north is dave jeglum.in des plaines or was .In glenview is Tony K.there is a philip Ng i believe in des plaines too.Phil Nearing had a branch school in highland park.dont know if its still there. His main school is downtown. Also mike Adams has a school in the west burbs someplace. If you want WC for fighting Phil Nearing is the man to see.No question about that.Dave Jeglum is very good.Heard scott baker is good but never met him.he is a Leung Ting style. As is Mike Adams. In chicago you have a bozetepe guy.2 Aug Fong schools.Phil Nearing who is Sam Kwoks senior rep in the states and 1 or 2 others that i have heard about on the south side but cant tell you much about them or if they still teach.
I live in Wisconsin, but I’ll be in the NW suburbs for at least a
while after Christmas. You may prefer to check out a real school,
but if you’re not actually going to be taking classes in the Chicago
area, and if it’s more convenient, let me know and we can meet.
I don’t yet teach, but have had to give the beginner’s speech to
plenty of new students.
Phillip Nearing the best for fighting? It would be hard to beat my teacher, Sifu Nikita Young Johnson. But we’re all entitled to our opinions. I’m always curious about wing chun in the area, does anyone have a link to information about P. Nearing or his school?
Anyway, we’re in North Chicago on Sheridan, my teacher only teaches semi-private, and you would have fun and learn something. Even if you don’t make it over I am interested in meeting you, drop me an e-mail. Don’t know the burbs too well, I hope you aren’t going to be too far away.
Could you tell me a little more about your sifu.contact number wing chun family etc.I thought i knew most of the WC teachers in Chicago.its my old home town.I ask because I have been asked to arrange a seminiar in chicago for a very famous WC sifu and I need to get an idea if sifus would allow their students to attend if any feet would be stepped on etc.
As to Phil Nearings fighting skill all I can say is his real world fighting experience would rival the best know fighters such as Boztepe.I am not saying that is good or bad or that he is the best or most knowledgeable teacher.Dont know your sifu no slight intented.Phil is very good at passing his fighting experience on and at one time he trained some very good fighters.
Hey, don’t worry about it. You Have Sifu Johnson’s name, his phone # is *** You can tell him Keith gave you the number. Sifu J has 28 years experience, I don’t remember who he studied with specifically, he said he studied with someone in the Ho Kam Ming lineage and someone else under Leung Ting. For the last 8 years he has been a JKD student of Ted Wong, Bruce Lee’s second student. I don’t harp on him about lineage, he respects all clans and his WC (forms, drills, theory, application) is excellent. I mentioned the fighting thing because Sifu grew up fighting, and he has a long history of ring-fighting experience, including full-contact TKD, boxing, kick-boxing, and MMA experience. He is really good at explaining how to modify WC for use in the ring. Plus he is a Cook County sheriff and ex-marine, but a pretty easy-going guy. We train at Master Kwan’s 7* PM kwoon on Sheridan. I don’t think Sifu Johnson ever had his own school, I sure think he should, but he probably doesn’t want to take on the extra work for almost no pay. He is fine with us attending other people’s seminars, but you should call him up anyway just to say hello.
