Siu Lam Do

Hi, I’m from the Wing Chun art of Kung Fu and in my lineage one of the weapons I will learn is the ‘Siu Lam Do’.

I have made searches to look for a picture of these but have not found anything. Does anyone have a website that has a picture of these, it would also be helpful if someone can tell me where I can buy them in the UK.

Thanks

Hm.

Hi Marcoma,
I am not familiar with any weapons in Wing Chun other than the two butterfly swords (Baat Jahm Do: 8 cutting knives) and the 9-12 ft and 6 ft poles (Luhk Dim Buhn Gwan: 6 1/2 point pole).

If you could provide the english translation or a photo of the weapon from your school/teacher that might help in your search. Or perhaps if you included the chinese characters for:

“Siu” - “Lam” - “Do”

It might better suit others in helping you. I am guessing that it is not a form/kata you are mistaking the above words for (ie. Siu Lim Tau or Siu Nihm Tau) since you specified it being a weapon.

If you follow this link http://www.wingchunkuen.com/what/systems/gulao.html it has information about the lineage of Wing Chun I learn.

It explains under the section ‘CURRICULUM’ this about the knives:

Yee Jee Seung Do (Parallel Double Knives)
Siu Lam Do (Shaolin Knives)

I understand the ‘Parallel Double Knives’ are the usual knives used in most lineages in Wing Chun, but I beleive the ‘Shaolin Knives’ are unique to this lineage.

What I really need is to know what double knives exist in shaolin kung fu.

My teacher tends to be quite secretive about some aspects of the art, and as I have only been learning from him for 8 months I feel he is a little reluctant to tell me all the information I seek from him.

They might be double daggers…

Maybe your lineage contains a broadsword form?

Do/Dao is knife. Wing Chun has the 8 cut knives in the Ip lineage, but you never know, there could have been additions to the style from the sifu(s) who have learned other stuff as well and see it as a good addition to the style.

Anyway, look for “darn dao” or “darn do” and you can see pics of Chinese broadswords.

or have a look here

cheers

I don’t think it’s the double daggers I’m looking for. The blade seems a bit short.

the knives I’m looking for I think should be longer than the better known ‘butterfly knives’ (they are about 11 inches in the blade length)

I found a site with ‘double dragon knives’ at: http://www.hunggarkungfu.com/double_dragons.html

I think what I’m looking for is similar to these but shorter. Any ideas what I should be looking for?

Those are double Broadswords.

cheers

The knives you are referencing are also called “Waist Knives”. Very similar in design to the Sabre but much shorter with a straight spine at the front.

On a survey tape I bought years back from Wing Lam they had a section on Southern martial Arts and part was of WingChun and a portion of this set was demonstrated. It was not the Bat Jam Do set we normally see.

ngokfei

Can you tell me the name of the tape you refer to. It is quite important to me that I find out more about the knives used and also I would like to see if the form you have seen is the same as the one we learn at our school.

Do you know from which lineage the Wing Chun being performed was?

And do you know of any site which has a picture of the knives you have seen.

many thanks

Marco
