Just to share - I don’t know if any of you saw the ABC news special they did on China a few months back, but part of the special featured the “remains” if you will of the Shaolin temple. Americans, and other foreigners can train in kung fu for a few weeks or months at a time.
One of the monks was tossing a brother my size (6’2" 215) around like a rag doll, using Shuai-Chiao. I had no idea what it was, but I always knew kung fu had some grappling techniques.
So, where’s that Ralek **** to dispute/badmouth kung fu when you need him?

“I’ll be too busy lookin’ good!”
Nothing sucks as much as your trolling, ignorance, and pathetic spelling and grammar.
Shuai Chiao does have groundfighting, but the preference is not to lay down on the guy while doing it. Instead, we prefer to break the thrown guys limbs while standing or with the throw itself. Shuai Chiao also has strikes - look at the site a little more and check out the “Rolling Waves” elbow to the throat strike. Illegal in your beloved nhb, but so what? Shuai Chiao is a fighting art, not a sport, although there is a sport aspect to it as shown in the tourney photos.
Here’s a thought - why not challenge David Chang or David Lin? They’re at least as far away as every other fighter you challenge, and I’m certain equally willing to give you the fractured limbs and severe concussions you so richly deserve.
Yeah, yeah, I know…don’t feed the trolls. Consider this a long winded ‘ttt’ if it bothers you.
shuai chiao is nothing like judo! judo means the gentle way, what about shuai chaio do you find gentle? get your facts straight before you make an ignorant comment about something you have absolutly no knowledge about!
dont worry you dont have to defend ralek. As with throwing, there also is only so many ways to skin a cat. What I mean is that in any kind of throwing style there are only so many ways that the human body can be thrown, so yes many stlyes have very similar throws just as many styles of fighting have punches and kicks, but just becuse we kick in CMA could you possible say that is the exact same kicks as muai tai or tae kwon do? this is what ralek has implied.
Dr. Daniel Weng, a shuai-chiao teacher, is contracted to form a combat curriculum for the Police Military College in Sao Paulo, Brazil. I’m not here to argue which style is better, but clearly this would suggest that Chinese Wrestling has combat value in the Brazilian authority’s eyes. I am sure they have seen BJJ, Luta Livre, Chute Boxing, etc. and they still see things this way. People exposed to both arts (BJJ and SC) see the value in SC, but you (who have never seen SC) are basing your opinion solely on the premise that because it is Chinese martial art, it must be no good. SC is a huge element of San Shou and you know that san shou is effective.
hmm, if shuai chiao is just judo w/o the groundwork, then bjj is just judo w/o the throws… Hey, Judo is superior! Now if you combine shuai chiao w/ bjj, well, in theory anyway…

Jujutsu comes from Shuai Chiao, so Shuai Chiao would obviously look like Judo. But you say Judo sucks, but your beloved Gracies do Judo.

Jujutsu does not come from China. It has its roots in Sumai (the ancient form of Sumo) Until reciently Sumo still had shuto and before that closed fists. check out the article at
Sumo came from Shuai Chiao. Chinese and Japanese historians back this up. If you look at pictures of Sumo, it looks like Shuai Chiao with fat guys.
It was a cultural implant from China that developed its own unique Japanese characteristics.
Like Shuai Chiao it has always been a ‘sport’ designed to help train warriors.
Modern Shuai Chiao ‘Chang Style’ reincorporated the folk wrestling with fisticuffs, which for some bizarre reason had been lost or misunderstood in many CMA schools. Traditionally Shuai Chiao was a Klingon like sport that was one of several skills a warrior needed to learn.
Most Shuai Chiao or Boke schools are strictly sporting. But it is a very rough sport.
When you read the apocryphal stories of ‘internal stylists’ beating ‘wrestlers’, it was because those Shuai Chiao guys were the guys to beat to make your rep.
Shuai Chiao can look very similar to Judo. Robert Smith complained that Judo was superior in throwing - but I don’t think Chang was honest with him. He wanted him to go away because he was friends with Zheng Ming Qing - who Chang did not respect.
Ralek - Shuai Chiao has some excellent ‘wrestling’ techniques. I suggest you take a look. I have a couple BJJ guys training with me to improve thier stand up grappling. My new Sambo training partner ties me into knots on the ground, but tells me he’s never been thrown so heiniously before from the stand up. It all has value - as long as we focus on knowing our goal and identifying the best training methods - regardless of style.
I am a big beleiver in luck. The more I work, the more luck I have.
One Gracie, cant remember his name, but it starts with R is a black belt in Judo.
I dont know if modern days bjj’s do stand up locks from jjj, but Helio and probably his sons too sure do.
