shaolin 18 Luohan hands
Greetings to Gene and all other kung fu brothers!
I read the article about the shaolin 18 luohan hands and iam confused. After reading many articles here in the forum some from Sal Canzonieri and Gene Ching and others, i thought that the major shaolin Luohan forms are the Xiao Luohan and the Da Luohan quan. And that the luohan 18 imitating form a myth is. The article shows some luohan gesture explanations.
-Does a 18 luohan gesture imitating form exists? Or are the techniques created for the article only from techniques fished out from the Da luohan form?
-Can someone tell me which other techniques from the Da Luohan form correspond to each luohan figure? Which technique for example is the calico bag luohan? or the plantage palm tree luohan? The guanyin luohan?The taming tiger luohan seems like the ending posture in most shaolin forms.

My article, Are You Worthy of Enlightenment? The Fist of Shaolin Luohan in this issue, begins with an overview of the Luohan forms. The techniques demonstrated are all extracted from Da Luohan Quan. The moves that I elucidated where the most Luohan-esque of that form. All 18 Luohan are not represented. Only the Luohan eyebrows one is so specific.
In regards to the 18 Luohan, here’s a direct quote from the article:
There is also 18 Hands of the Luohan (luohan shi ba shou ), a popular form frequently and apocryphally attributed to Damo, that also gives homage to the eighteen Luohan of China. This form is often eighteen lines of basic techniques repeated like line drills which are strung together with connecting movements.

Thank you Gene for your answer.is it possible to list which techniques from the da luohan form or another shaolin form matches with the characteristics of the 18 luohan statues?can this be answered here or is this good for a thread itself? For exaple, the second move from the daluohan loan holds sea could be the dragon subduing luohan.the reading the scripts by looking into his palm move could be the damo luohan who brings the scripts. The tiger taming could be the finishing technique of most shaolin forms,hero sits on mountain.what’s with the other luohan statues?the bag carrying luohan,the elephant riding,and the rest of them ?in wikipedia if you type 18 luohan you will find all luohan with their characteristics.

At least, I’ve never heard of that. The statues are interpretive and subject to interpretation, just like the apostles of Jesus, so a literal representation of techniques within the forms would be quite an extrapolation. That being said, I don’t know for sure. Perhaps someone created a form that represents each of the 18 Luohan, akin to Drunken Style forms that have techniques for each of the 8 Drunken Immortals. It’s just that I’ve never seen that. If you find it, do let us know here.
Shaolin is vast and diverse. There are Luohan styles that are just Luohan (or Arhat) within the Shaolin diaspora. We offer a classic traditional one:
Grandmaster Peng Gaoji: Arhat Fist luohanquan In the final years of the Qing Dynasty, Yang Zhaoyuan of Leshan Mountain followed his master Shi Zhipu to Songshan Shaolin Temple in Henan Province to study martial arts. Yang mastered the Shaolin method and returned to Leshan to teach Arhat Fist in the Neijiang district. An Arhat, or luohan in Chinese, is an enlightened being of Buddhist mythology often imbued with magical powers. Grandmaster Gao Chunhe was born in 1912 in Neijiang in Sichuan Province, China. He studied martial arts from childhood and rose to become one of China’s greatest masters. The Legendary Grandmasters of China series showcases many of the leading elder grandmasters of China. The footage was collected from 1983 to 1986 during China’s National Martial Arts Survey. When the department in charge of this survey was shut down by the government, much of the data was lost. Fortunately, some footage was recovered and has been re-mastered to include new lesson material. Each form demonstrated by the Grandmasters is broken down for instructional purposes by leading contemporary practitioners of these styles.
