RIP Grandmaster Ip Ching 1936-2020

GM IP CHING SADLY PASSES AWAY AT THE AGE OF 83 YEARS OLD | R.I.P.
BY WING CHUN NEWS JANUARY 26, 2020

GrandMaster Ip Ching was one of few living Grandmasters in the Ip Man (Yip Man) family of Wing Chun Kung Fu until his death.

He was born Ip Hok-ching in Foshan in 1936 as the second son of Ip Man and his wife Cheung Wing-sing. This was short lived as his parents and his sister Ip Nga-sum had to leave and travel to Hong Kong in about 1950 in search of a better life for the family, with only his mother and sister returned home later on.

In 1962, due to the Cultural Revolution, Ip Ching and his older brother Ip Chun were forced to leave Foshan and moved to Hong Kong to join their father.

His father Ip Man taught from his home. At one point his father walked out of his home to live elsewhere due to a dispute with him and Ip Chun over his Shanghai mistress and his illegitimate son Ip Siu-wah. His father barely interacted with him and his brother since then, except for their training lessons.

As well as learning Wing Chun at his fathers home, Ip Ching also was an avid observer of his father teaching other students. In turn gaining valuable insight on his fathers teaching methods.

After Ip Mans death in 1972, Ip Ching left the training hall but continued to reside in his fathers home. He later ran a manufacturing business in Lam Tei, New Territories, and continued to teach Wing Chun privately to his disciples in his home.

In 1994, he retired and devoted himself to full-time teaching in Wing Chun.

He served as a Wing Chun consultant alongside his brother Chun in Ip Man 3.

He passed on Saturday January 25th, 2020 at the age of 83.

We lost a lot of greats last weekend, none of whom I had the honor of meeting: Kobe, Nasty & GM Ip Ching

Ye Chun, the grandfather of Wing Chun Boxing, asked Ye Zheng, who died at the age of 83 last year. Brother Ye Zheng, in an interview with the media, confirmed that his brother had died at 11 pm and pointed out that the other party had been ill for a while, and Li Yuchang, chairman of the Hong Kong Wing Chun Sports Association, also commented on his Facebook page: I am pleased to announce that Master Ye Zheng died peacefully last night. "

Ye Zheng has been studying Wing Chun with his father Ye Wen since he was 7 years old. Ye Wen went to Hong Kong in 1949. Ye Zheng stayed in Foshan with his mother Zhang Yongcheng and elder brother Ye Jun until 1962. Ye Zheng went to Hong Kong with his brother Ye Jun. It is rumored that Ye Jun and Ye Zheng were dissatisfied with his father’s falling in love with a Shanghai woman and gave birth to an illegitimate child, Ye Shaohua. Therefore, the two often went out early and returned home late, with little communication with their father. After Ye Wen’s death in 1972, Ye Zheng also left Wu Guan and opened a factory in the New Territories. He taught Wing Chun to others in private at home. In 1994, Ye Zheng was apprenticed to the Chinese academy class opened by the Wing Chun Sports Club, and occasionally taught Wing Chun Quan.

The role of Ye Zheng also appeared in the film series of “Ye Wen” starring Zhen Zidan, and played by Wang Shi and Ye He in “Ye Wen 3” and “Ye Wen 4” respectively.

Martial arts legend Ip Man’s son, Ip Ching, has died – 5 things to know about the wing chun grandmaster
Ip Ching and his older brother, Ip Chun, never met Bruce Lee, but worked as consultants with Donnie Yen on the Ip Man film series, and Ip Ching was a major character in the new Ip Man 4: The Finale

Ip Ching, the second son of martial arts legend Ip Man, died over Lunar New Year. Although not an well known as his immortally iconic father, Ip Ching still lived a life less ordinary. Here are five things you should know.

  1. Like his father, Ip Ching was also a wing chun grandmaster Ip Ching learned wing chun from his father, Ip Man. Given that Ip Man’s school was at his home, learning wing chun was almost unavoidable. Both he and his older brother were students of the famous master who would eventually instruct a young Bruce Lee. Although the brothers would both become grandmasters, their martial arts studies were conducted out of respect for their father and a desire to maintain tradition as opposed to Lee’s innate passion.

  2. He gave up martial arts to become a businessman Although both Ip Ching and Ip Chun assisted their father in teaching wing chun until the master’s death in 1972, they did not, initially, continue to teach lessons. Ching turned to business and opened a factory in the New Territories following the boom in manufacturing in Hong Kong during the 1960s. Ching offered private wing chun lessons but it was decades before he would become more active in martial arts.

  3. He never met Bruce Lee Despite his father’s pivotal role in the martial arts education of Bruce Lee, Ip Ching never met the superstar. When Ip Man was training Bruce Lee, Ching and his older brother were still in Foshan in central Guangdong province. By the time the siblings moved to Hong Kong in 1962, fleeing the Cultural Revolution, Lee had already departed for the United States.

  4. He served as a consultant on Donnie Yen’s films Ip Ching returned to wing chun in the 1990s following his retirement from business. Ching began teaching the martial art at the Ving Tsun Athletic Association in Mong Kok and hosting seminars around the world on his father’s legacy. Although not initially brought on-board for the hugely successful Ip Man series, in which Donnie Yen played the title role, both Ip Ching and Ip Chun worked with Yen as wing chun consultants on the third instalment. Possibly with one eye on the future …

  1. Ip Ching was a major character in Ip Man 4 Perhaps one of the reasons Yen wished to engage Ip Man’s sons with his franchise is because he wanted to feature them in his films. Although Yen once swore that Ip Man 3 was going to be the series finale, he eventually conceded he wished to make a fourth film. Released in Hong Kong before Christmas, Ip Man 4: The Finale has Taiwanese actor Jim Liu play Ip Ching, whose fight against a bully sees him expelled from school. It is this event that pushes Ip Man to travel to San Francisco, where his former pupil Bruce Lee lives, to find a new home for his tempestuous son.[/QUOTE]
