18th January 2026 – (Hong Kong) Hong Kong martial arts actor and film star Bruce Leung Siu-lung has passed away, his death confirmed by friends. The veteran performer, renowned for his prolific career in action cinema, died on 14th January at the age of 77.
His family is currently handling funeral arrangements privately. A service is tentatively scheduled for January 26th in the Longgang district of Shenzhen.
Leung, often credited as Bruce Leung or Bruce Liang, was a prominent figure in the Hong Kong film industry throughout the 1970s and 1980s. A skilled martial artist trained in Goju-ryu Karate and Wing Chun, he starred in numerous genre classics and was occasionally grouped among the “Bruceploitation” actors who emerged following Bruce Lee’s death.
While he appeared in many films, including The Tattoo Connection and Jackie Chan’s Magnificent Bodyguards, he is perhaps best known to international audiences for his memorable role as the villainous Beast in Stephen Chow’s 2004 global hit, Kung Fu Hustle. The part marked a successful comeback after a period away from the screen.
Leung’s career spanned decades, with later work including the 2007 documentary Dragonland and the 2020 Chinese television series Heroes. He is survived by his wife, Song Xiang, whom he married in 1995, and their two children.
Very sad news. I was honored to be able to interview him for our penultimate pre-pandemic issue, the Winter 2020 - From Bruce to the Beast and Beyond By Gene Ching
