Qigong for a beginner

I put this in the internal forum and got no responses, so I’ll take one more swing.

Can anyone suggest a book on Qigong that is for a complete beginner. It could/may show some very basic excercises for cultivating chi and/or talk about principles/theories involved in cultivating chi.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The Root of Chinese Qi-Gong

I’m reading this one now. A lot of qi gong theory, and a few basic exercises although they’re mostly to explain one theory or another. Good to read in combination with regular classes.

And what do you wish to achieve out of your training, Arhat of Fury?

The reason I ask is because there are many different sources with different manners of presentation.

A book might or might not be the best bet, depending on what your goals are.

What am I trying to achieve?

I think what I am looking for is basic excercises to help maximize strength through breathing and cultivating inner power as opposed to external power.

Something to supplement hard with the soft. Something that will boost focus and mental strength as well..

The Art of Chi Kung by Wong Kiew Kit is a very good primer for the beginner.

He does have some “way out” stuff in there that is likely a little too esoteric, but there are also fundamentalo qigong exercises in the book with decent illustrations and explanations.

I found the Art of Chi Kung to be a lot more hype than substance. Chi Kung for Health and Martial Arts is a pretty good beginners quide.

I see from your profile that you train Choy Li Fut, Arhat of Fury.

I don’t know much about Choy Li Fut, but aren’t there are meditative and breath control exercises inherent to that style?

My experience in Choy Li Fut is truly minimal. But I do know that just about all of the other “traditional” Chinese styles I’ve been exposed to have their own unique meditation/breath control exercises. I’d imagine Choy Li Fut to be no different in that regard.

Perhaps you could ask your sifu, Arhat of Fury. Maybe he could suggest something for you to try.
