EXCLUSIVE: Myles Truitt (BMF), Taimak (The Last Dragon), Walter E. Jones (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers), Quartay DeNaya (Pizza Guys Vs Vampires) and wrestler Daria Rae Berenato have joined the cast of martial arts feature, Paper Made, which is slated to shoot March in Tampa, Florida.
Writer-director Ryan Watson’s film is set in a fictional HBCU (historically Black colleges and universities) and follows Tavon Watkins (Truitt), who joins a secret fraternity of Black martial artists after a severe hazing incident. The script was co-written by Watson and Jerron Horton (Forever).
The ensemble cast also includes wrestler Jamara Garrett, aka Mara Sadé, stuntman and martial artist Sam Lee Herring (Back In Action), and martial artist Jair Muhammad.
Shaun Greenspan (Amber Alert), Brian Yuran, and Daria Rae Berenato are producing. Casting is by Karlie Loland-Ringer. Taimak and Walter E. Jones will serve as executive producers.
“Martial arts have been a part of the black American experience for generations and our film brings that excellence to the forefront from a perspective that has rarely, if ever, been seen in American cinema,” noted Watson.
Producers Yuran and Berenato, who are hoping the project can spawn a franchise, added: “Growing up loving both martial arts and cinema in New Jersey, this story gripped us the first time we read Ryan and Jerron’s script. They have crafted a dynamic character piece with an action twist. This story transcends all cultures and Tavon is a protagonist for all.”
