In year 2000, DDP won the presidency due to voters looking for an alternative party. KMT ruled Taiwan over half of last century. The other thing is that Song and Lian split the votes among KMT supporters.
In year 2004, the bullet incident moved the independent votes toward Chen/DDP. He won by a very narrow margin. Truth about the incident is still under investigation. Jackie Chan said it was a joke of the world.

Jackie Chan sticked by his words by not going to Taiwan for now.
The ongoing street movement is from the society across the board. It is not from KMT.
These are independent voters. They are not KMT or DDP.
Taiwan is again looking for an alternative. non DDP and non KMT.
Chen’s 6 years’ rule was short of expectation. or there is a general discontent in the society. Whether any corruption related to the first family or extended family is not the issue. There is a general dissatisfaction with Chen/DDP rule over all.
Seeing the rising waves of the street movements/independent voters.
Whoever taps into it will win the next presidential election.
Since premier Su and mayor Ma are both contenders for the president in 2008.
Each has his moves.
DDP is shifting focus to constitutional amendment and asked all parties to talk to end the street protest. There is no mentioning of president resigning and said all the problems are constitutional defect or differences between president or cabinet ruling the country. And Shih has other motives and using the pretext of honesty and integrity.
Premier Su asked for Shih and speaker of legislative yuan Wang and excluding opposition KMT chair Ma. And said Wang is more appropiate to talk as this is a constitution crisis?
Mayor Ma will talk to Shih and vp Lu and not president Chen.
Just like Mr. Gandhi in India. He did hunger strike and civil disobedience till the British Empire granting independence of India.

Shih will continue the marathon of sit-in or people take turns in sit-in protest in front of the presidential office till Chen leaves office in May 2008.

you are overly romantic about this issue.
one of the female head-organizer in the taipei demonstration got shouted down by the demonstrators and had to apologize for the comment, “Long live the republic of Taiwan”. take a wild guess on the political leaning for 50% of the demonstrators.
it is both. the president and 5 or 3 braches of yuan to balance.
it is about balance of power and not the president or cabinet has final say or absolute power.

Just to be clear, I was analyzing this particular statement
If you read some of the news accounts in the papers (not the one you have here), you will see that the people who are leading the sit-in outside of taipei are usually KMT legislators. there is one or two ex-dpp legislators, but they are the exceptions.
sufficient moderates have been mobilized, so this isn’t the usual KMT vs DPP showndown. DPP is also having trouble characterizing this particular showndown as Chinese overlords vs Indigenous taiwanese peasants that had work wonders for them time and time again. This time, there is a ongoing criminal investigation over CSB’s indiscretions. However, to presume, large majority of participants are not KMT supporters or those with KMT leaning is extremely naive.
with regard to the consitutional changes, CSB couldn’t have gotten it done at the zenith of his power. What possibility does he have power to do this now? It is a smoke screen. He trying everything and anything to change the subject. As long as they are talking about the criminal investigation regarding his involvement in the embezzlement ofl presidential funds, he can’t get out of this hole.
Being a leader/president is like a father. His people is like his son.
“Even a ferocious tiger will not eat its son.” (Hu Fu Bu Shi Zi) So a president will love/take care of his people like a father loves/takes care of his son.
When money and power seem to corrupt or be the central value in the society of Taiwan and China, a lookback or reference to Li may not be a bad idea.
When Li is the value of a society, a country is “ruled”.
